No Good Deed, the new show from Emmy-nominated writer-producer Liz Feldman, premiered on Netflix on December 12, 2024. On the show, Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow play Paul and Lydia Morgan, a couple trying to sell their LA home. With three families interested in buying the house, long buried secrets of the Morgan household start to unravel.
Feldman, who is known for her Primetime Emmy-nominated black comedy series Dead To Me, adds signature mix of tragedy and humor in No Good Deed. The new show should keep viewers hooked and eager to know what had really happened in the Morgans' house in the past, and why have they kept it a secret.
Let us now explore the ending of No Good Deed in detail.
The article contains major spoilers.
What secret does the Morgan house hold in No Good Deed?
The hidden secret of the Morgan household comes to light gradually as the show progresses. The viewers come to know that Paul and Lydia’s youngest child, Jacob, had died in the house and the couple's daughter Emily has never visited them since the tragedy.
The reason behind Emily’s absence from the house finally unfolds in Episode 7. It is revealed that she holds herself responsible for Jacob’s death and has, hence, never returned to the house.
Things finally become clear on the 8th episode. Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that Jacob used to steal luxury items from the neighborhood and the matter was a subject of speculation and gossip.
Jacob would gift the stolen items to Margo (Linda Cardellini) but she turns him down. In a fit of rage, Jacob demands the items back and also threatens to reveal details of their age-inappropriate relationship to Margo’s husband, JD (Luke Wilson). Margo tells Jacob they were never really in a relationship. She eventually mentions to Lydia that Jacob had a crush on her, which she never reciprocated.
It is actually never made clear whether Margo and Jacob were in a relationship. Feldman wanted to leave that to audience interpretation. She told Tudum,
“I want to leave that to the interpretation of the audience. But we do know that she’s someone who isn’t bogged down by scruples.”
Regardless of the nature of their relationship, when confronted by Jacob, Margo chases him out of her home by threatening him with JD’s gun. Jacob had entered Margo's house wearing a ski-mask as part of his burglar's disguise. He runs out on seeing the gun in Margo's hand and heads for his own house when a gunshot is heard. It turns out Emily had fired the gun thinking a masked intruder was breaking into their home, without any idea it was her brother, Jacob.
Who killed Jacob in No Good Deed?
Despite what No Good Deed makes the audience believe at the time of Jacob’s death, Emily did not kill her brother. It was Margo who shot him dead with her husband’s gun. However, when she saw Emily in a state of shock, Margo quickly left the scene and let the Morgans make whatever assumptions they wanted to.
Paul and Lydia naturally thought Emily had killed her brother by mistake. Paul then contacts Mikey (Denis Leary), to help them create a fake break-in. They hide the murder weapon and suppress the autopsy report, too, telling everyone Jacob had been shot by an intruder during a break-in.
With No Good Deed gearing up for its conclusion, it has now become clear to the Morgans that Emily did not kill Jacob. Their new buyer Leslie Fisher (Abbi Jacobson) studies the autopsy report and it is evident that the gun that killed Jacob was the same as JD's.
Who buys the Morgan house in No Good Deed?
The Morgan house, after a tough competition among different buyers, ultimately goes to the married couple Sarah (Poppy Liu), pregnant with a baby boy, and Leslie. Episode 8 shows them standing in front of the house, planning their future.
Feldman said the positive conclusion was the idea of Bruce Eric Kaplan, writer of No Good Deed. She mentioned,
“He was like, ‘Can’t we just give someone a happy ending? Don’t we want it to feel satisfying?’ We wanted it to feel like the life of this house could continue with a totally fresh family who could bring its own love and care to it. And that there’s a family that this house can take care of in return.”
No Good Deed can be streamed on Netflix.
