High Potential has proven to be a smash hit for ABC. The crime drama premiered on September 17, 2024, and has ever since impressed the audience with the story of Morgan, a cleaning lady at LAPD with an unbelievably sharp mind.

When Morgan, played by Kaitlin Olson, accidentally solves a murder case, she is hired as a consultant by the LAPD to help with solving more cases. She agrees to work as a consultant on one condition: the police have to help her find her ex-husband, Roman, who disappeared 15 years ago.

As the episodes go on, more details about Roman and his past with Morgan come to the forefront. However, High Potential has yet to reveal what transpired with Morgan’s ex-husband. There are several possibilities for what happened to Morgan 15 years ago.

A possibility is that Roman might have been involved in criminal activities and disappeared to escape from the consequences. Another possibility could be that he is in the Witness Protection Program. He may have even been killed by Morgan, herself. Let's take a look at the possibilities around what might have happened to Roman, in detail.

What happened to Roman in High Potential? Possibilities Explored

Roman’s disappearance is at the center of the narrative in High Potential. While Morgan uses her genius to crack LAPD cases, she is also focused on finding out how her ex-husband, and the father of her daughter Ava, went missing 15 years ago and if he is still alive.

The show has dropped a few clues so far, which have led to some theories about where Roman is. Some obvious possibilities are that he could have been killed, or kidnapped, or he abandoned his family by his own choice.

However, considering the tone and setting of High Potential, it is unlikely that the show would take an obvious route. Instead, one theory suggests that Roman might have been involved in criminal activities, and left the town and his life behind to escape from authorities or dangerous organizations.

Another possibility is Roman was arrested by the police. The authorities either eliminated him or gave him a new identity in exchange for sensitive information on a case. This explains why Roman did not contact his family for 15 years.

Morgan was earlier told that Roman left her due to being overwhelmed with the responsibility of being a father; however, this does not seem to be the case as later it was revealed that diapers were found in his car, which means he was planning to come back.

One rather controversial possibility is that Morgan killed Roman herself and made an elaborate story about his disappearance to hide her crime. Considering how sharp Morgan is, this theory seems plausible as she smartly covered her tracks.

High Potential showrunner reveals when the mystery about Roman will be uncovered

Showrunner Todd Harthan explained the final episodes of High Potential Season 1 would make some surprising revelations about Roman. He revealed he left some breadcrumbs about the disappearance in the first half of the season, which will get a payout in the second half.

Harthan said in an interview with TVLine:

“It’s big in the back half. It’s big and it’s exciting. It really blooms in three of our back six episodes. What I did not want to do was drop these little breadcrumbs and not give the audience something more substantial in the back half as a promise to what could come in a future season.”

He further teased that the revelation will deeply affect Morgan and Ava and might leave the audience heartbroken:

“Obviously it impacts Morgan, but by extension, it also gets to Ava. There are some really wonderful things in that story that happen between mother and daughter that I think the audience is going to love. Some of it will be exciting and mysterious, and some of it will just rip your heart out”

High Potential Season 1 will start airing the rest of the episodes on ABC on January 7, 2025.
