Episode featuring Melissa Lamesch’s tragic death to air on Investigation Discovery
People Magazine Investigates has been featuring some of the most shocking true-crime cases on Investigation Discovery. The upcoming episode will delve into the startling murder of a nine-month pregnant EMT Melissa Lamesch.
On November 25, 2020, after suspecting fire at Lamesch's house, a neighbor called 911 and reported the incident. The firefighters arrived but Lamesch had already died while carrying her unborn baby. This case emerged as one of the most horrifying crimes in Mount Morris, Illinois, and made headlines. Now, after four years, the case will be shown on Investigation Discovery.
As shared in her obituary:
"She was known for her tremendously unique smile, always arriving fashionably late, and her love of eating and napping. Everything was done in her perfectionistic ways and always in true "Melissa Fashion." She was unapologetically herself."
Lamesch was just 27 and was eager to welcome her first child. However, little did she know that the man she loved and was going to have a son with had the most sinister plan of killing her and the unborn baby.
The trial of Matthew Plote: Melissa Lamesch murder case on Investigation Discovery
The episode which will air on Investigation Discovery will also dive into the details of the investigation and trial of Lamesch's boyfriend Matthew Plote. While the initial suspicion was that the pregnant woman died of smoke inhalation, a shocking revelation from the coroner confirmed she was strangled to death.
This led to the investigation of foul play and Matthew Plote, a firefighter and paramedic with the Carol Stream Fire Department, quickly became the prime suspect. He met Lamesch during their college in 2013, and the two gradually formed a close bond.
However, Lamesch's sister Cassandra Baal revealed that Plote didn't want to start a family and take responsibility for raising a child. Despite his decision, Melissa Lamesch was determined to raise the baby on her own.
As the investigation continued, authorities discovered critical forensic evidence. Per Forensic scientist Blake Aper with the Illinois State Police Forensic Science Laboratory, the DNA found on Lamesch's dead body matched with Matthew Plote.
Plote was finally arrested in March 2022 and confessed to being present at Melissa Lamesch's house on the day of her murder. He claimed that he didn't kill the woman and left the home after having a brief conversation.
Prosecutors argued that Plote didn't want to become a father and killed his girlfriend. On March 22, 2024, Matthew Plote was found guilty of first-degree murder, the intentional homicide of an unborn child, arson, and battery.
His conviction served as the moment of justice for the Lamesch family as they have been waiting for answers since 2022. Plote's lifetime sentencing ensures that he will continue paying for the brutal murder of both Melissa Lamesch and her unborn son.
