In the show Severance on Apple TV+, Mark's wife, Gemma, is thought to have passed away in a car accident before the story even starts. This messed Mark up and he decided to go through the severance procedure. It's like a mental split where his work memories are separate from his ones. He's got a work-self and a home-self, and they don't know about each other.
But hold on, because, in Severance Season 1, there's this twist that hits you like a ton of bricks in Episode 7: it turns out Gemma isn't dead. She's alive and working at the place where Mark works, Lumon Industries. She's there as Ms. Casey, the Wellness Counselor.

The Ms. Casey revelation redefined Severance’s storyline
When we found out Ms. Casey is Gemma in Severance, it was a huge twist! At first, she came off as tough and unemotional, especially during those wellness chats with the workers. Her way of dealing with things was way more intense than Helly or Irving, which got the majority of the fans curious about what kind of severance she went through. Maybe Lumon did something extra to her, like completely wiping out her personality?
Then in Episode 7, Mark had a bit too much to drink and ended up ripping apart a picture of his wife, who we now know is Gemma. It was a sneaky way to show the viewers her face. After that, when Mark's innie put the photo back together, it was like a puzzle piece clicking into place – confirming that Ms. Casey was his wife all along.
We still don't know why Lumon did this, but the ideas fly. Some think they faked her death to bring her into the experiments. Others think she might not have died at all, and the severance was a way to keep her alive after the car accident.
What got to Severance fans was seeing how Mark's innie found out about her being Gemma. It showed just how much control Lumon has over its employees' lives, mixing up what's personal and what's work in a way that's just plain creepy.
Theories on what Lumon did to Gemma on Severance
The season finale dropped a bombshell when it showed that Ms. Casey works for Lumon only part-time. This has got everyone’s wheels spinning with the possibility that she might be working in various departments, or even that she’s two separate people living in the same body, known as an "innie." It’s mind-blowing!
The fact that she doesn’t have any scars from the car crash she was in adds fuel to the fire, with some thinking that Lumon might have made a copy of her, or rebuilt her entirely. And the testing floor she gets sent to in the last episode is out of a sci-fi movie, people suspect they’re playing with cloning tech down there.
Then there’s Irving’s strange obsession with painting the testing floor, which has some fans thinking Lumon might mess with their employees’ heads, controlling their thoughts. This brings the fans to the theory that maybe they did something to Ms. Casey’s mind, like wiping the slate clean of her past life. It’s eerie to think about and makes you wonder if she’s even the real Gemma anymore.
Find out what happened to her, and what Lumon’s been up to on Apple TV+!
