According to WAFB, it was revealed that American Idol star John Foster's friend, Maggie Dunn, and Caroline Gill passed away on December 31, 2022. Dunn's then 18-year-old brother, Liam Dunn, was also injured. This incident happened when a police officer crashed his car due to speeding while chasing after 25-year-old Tyquel Zanders, a potential suspect in car theft.

Tyquel had allegedly stolen a family member's car in Baton Rouge.

It was later disclosed that Officer David Lee Cauthorn, Addis PD, and five patrol officers with BRPD were allegedly involved in this matter. Officer David was driving at 86 miles per hour as his car clashed with Dunn's due to overspeeding. Brusly High School cheerleaders, 17-year-old Maggie Dunn and 15-year-old Caroline Gill, suffered severe injuries, which led to their deaths on the spot.

Gill's parents filed a lawsuit questioning the authorities and the police officers who were involved in not following basic driving rules. After that, David resigned as he was responsible for "two counts of manslaughter, aggravated obstruction of a highway, negligent injury, malfeasance in office, and reckless operation of a vehicle."

The American Idol star John Foster paid a heartfelt tribute to her friend on the show's stage. He became emotional while dedicating an original song, Tell That Angel I Love Her, to his friend. The judges were impressed by John's voice and offered their condolences for Maggie's death.

The American Idol star Carrie Underwood praised him, saying:

"There’s something so wonderfully throwback about your voice, about your style. I think it’s something that’s lacking in country music today, to be honest. We have a lot of outlaw country, we have a lot of new country, and I love that you keep it very traditional. I feel like that’s who you are. I love that in this song we go to hear a sweet, tender side of your voice that honestly I didn’t know you had.”

As per the Associated Press' March 18, 2024, article, the former Louisiana police officer was sentenced to 32 years in prison with 22 suspended. District Judge Tonya Lurry stated that Cauthorn was to address his actions with the school and law enforcement; meanwhile, he will not be allowed to work in the police force.
