Yellowstone has finally come to an end and after five seasons, the series wrapped up its final chapter. It left fans with countless memories, dramatic moments, and emotional goodbyes.

While the central Dutton drama stole the spotlight, fans also wondered about the fates of the supporting characters, including Lloyd. Throughout the entire series, we believed his name was Lloyd Pierce, but the final season had something else in store for us.

Was it just a mistake? Perhaps, we’ll get to know that in the future if Yellowstone comes back with a spin-off that could explore Lloyd’s sudden new name. For now, Lloyd has retired from his job as a cowboy.

The show's finale didn’t disappoint. It even brought relief to a lot of fans as justice was served to a few characters. But of course, it also had a few heartbreaking moments, including John Dutton’s sudden death and then the ultimate deed to protect the Dutton family legacy.

Who Is Lloyd in Yellowstone?

Lloyd is played by Forrie J. Smith. He isn’t just another ranch hand at Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, he’s practically part of the furniture. He is a seasoned cowboy and one of the most loyal members of the ranch crew.

Lloyd has been around longer than anyone else. He has earned respect from both the Duttons and viewers alike, ever since he was introduced in Yellowstone Season 1.

Lloyd is a quiet, yet tough-as-nails character. He embodies the rugged cowboy spirit. He’s got the Yellowstone brand on his chest, and it signals not only his loyalty to the ranch, but also a checkered past.

Much of Lloyd’s backstory remains a mystery, though. This is highlighted in Season 5 as well when his name is suddenly changed from Lloyd Pierce to Lloyd Bridger. But, his years of service to the Dutton family paints him as someone deeply tied to the land and its legacy.

Beyond his grit, Lloyd has a soft side, and that’s especially visible in his relationships with Rip Wheeler and Jimmy Hurdstrom. He’s a mentor, a father figure, and even a bit of a therapist for the younger ranch hands.

We have seen him offering sage advice and tough love when needed. Lloyd’s wisdom and old-school values ground everyone amidst the Dutton family drama.

Lloyd is not at the forefront of the power struggles. But, we cannot imagine Yellowstone without him. He definitely adds depth to the ranch’s dynamic.

What happened to Lloyd in Yellowstone?

Lloyd’s relationship with Rip is one of the show’s highlights. The two share an unspoken bond. They have been working together for years. Rip trusts Lloyd and often relies on him when things get tough.

His connection with Jimmy is equally heartwarming. Lloyd takes Jimmy under his wing. He teaches him not just how to be a cowboy but also how to figure out a way through life’s challenges. It’s this mentorship that endears Lloyd to fans.

However, over the seasons, Lloyd has had his fair share of ups and downs. In Season 4, Lloyd found himself at the center of one of the ranch’s most explosive conflicts.

His rivalry with fellow ranch hand Walker boiled over after Walker won the affections of Laramie. She was a barrel racer Lloyd had feelings for. The tension led to a dramatic fight. Rip had to break it up.

He expected Lloyd to be a mentor to the other ranchers. But when Lloyd himself broke the rules of the bunkhouse, Rip had to bring him to his senses by beating him up and making an example out of him.

He did this so that nobody else in the bunkhouse would repeat the same mistake. And Lloyd was sensible enough to understand why Rip did what he did. Even after this rocky period, Lloyd proved his loyalty. He worked to rebuild trust with Rip and the rest of the crew.

As we moved forward to Season 5, Part 2, Lloyd’s screen time shrank a bit. The focus shifted to other characters and plotlines. But, Lloyd remained at the ranch. He kept things running smoothly.

Though he didn’t play a central role in the final episodes, Lloyd was there when it counted. He continued to support Rip and the Duttons. Thankfully, Lloyd makes it through Yellowstone unscathed. At least that’s what we think, as his death isn’t shown in the final season.

But, there was one thing that caught our attention. He was called “Lloyd Bridger” by Rip. Lloyd has been known as “Lloyd Pierce” since the introduction of his character.

The sudden change of his last name makes us wonder if there is some backstory of the character that’s yet to be explored. Or if this was just an honest mistake by the show.

If at all, Yellowstone brings out another spin-off that explores his storyline and backstory, we might get our answer to this question. But for now, we have to make peace with what we have.
