After a long wait of three years, Squid Game Season 2 has finally arrived on Netflix. The new season of the Korean survival thriller series continues the journey of Seong Gi-hun, the winner of the previous edition of the game, who returns to seek revenge on the organizers.

As most of the main characters died by the end of the first season, the second installment features a relatively fresh set of cast. However, along with Gi-hun, another season 1 veteran makes a surprise return to the show: Jung-bae.

Played by Lee Seo-hwan, Jung-bae is Gi-hun’s friend who runs a pub and bets on horse races. In Squid Game Season 2, he joins the game due to financial struggles but is killed in the end by the Front Man.

Jung-bae enters the game as Player 390 in Squid Game season 2. In the first season, he is shown to be addicted to gambling, a trait he shares with Gi-hun. The two spend a lot of time together, and Gi-hun helps him get out of trouble with some loan sharks.

However, Jung-bae's gambling habits catch up to him, and he suffers under the weight of debt. In the second season, he decides to join the Squid Game in hopes of winning a fortune. When he arrives, he runs into Gi-hun again, and they catch up on old times.

The two friends share some hope in the middle of all the violence for a brief moment. As the deadly games continue, the stakes keep getting high, but Jung-bae is able to survive some challenges.

After a brutal fight in the bathroom and a massacre among the contestants, Gi-hun and Jung-bae, along with a few other players, try to fight back against the guards. They grab weapons from the guards and make their way through the maze-like hallways, but soon, they reach a deadlock.

The group is eventually trapped, which makes the situation worse. The players then have a showdown with the guards in Squid Game Season 2 finale, during which Jung-bae is shot and killed by the Front Man. Gi-hun is devastated about his losing his friend. However, the games continue, and he is left to mourn.

Actor Lee Jung-jae, who plays Seong Gi-hun in the show, opened up about how Jung-bae’s death will affect his character and change his personality in the next season. Jung-jae said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“Maybe he will feel a little bit lost, or he doesn't know what to do next, or maybe he will become more furious and vengeful and really hate the host behind the game. I think the viewers, also, will be curious how changed a person Gi-hun would be in season 3.”

He further talked about how the addition of Jung-bae in the games helped showcase an older version of Gi-hun. Reuniting with his friend brought out his fun and childish side, which had not been seen in a long time. Jung-jae said:

“Whenever I shared scenes with Jung-bae, it may be brief, but I think it was my opportunity to show the older Gi-hun, the side of past Gi-hun where he was more childish and more fun, and also show how deep of a friendship I share with Jung-bae.”

All episodes of Squid Game Season 2 are now streaming on Netflix.
