Jesse Williams appeared as Dr. Jackson in Grey's Anatomy Season 6 but left the show in Season 17. Dr. Jackson is a driven and ambitious plastic surgeon, best known for being in a complicated on-again, off-again relationship with trauma surgeon April Kepner.
In season 17 of Grey's Anatomy, Jackson left Seattle to move to Boston to take over the Catherine Fox Foundation, which belonged to his mother. Episode 15 Tradition was Jackson’s official last episode. The actor later returned to the show in a guest role in Season 18 for the show's 400th episode. He arrived at the hospital with April to convince Meredith Grey to stay there.
He again returned in two episodes of Season 19 to complete preparations for Meredith's move to Boston, which ended with Ellen Pompeo leaving the show.
Although the show had a storyline to explain Dr Jack's departure, Jackson's real reason for leaving Grey's Anatomy was to star in the Broadway revival of Richard Greenberg's Take Me Out. The actor told The New York Times,
“I knew that as I designed my exit, the next thing I did had to be terrifying. I needed to get out of my comfort zone, I needed to go into a very unknown place.”
