Industry is a television series that first started airing in 2020. Mickey Down and Konrad Kay wrote the show about a group of recent graduates trying to land a permanent position at Pierpoint & Co, a large investment bank in London.
Industry premiered on HBO on November 9, 2020, and on BBC Two on November 10, 2020. The series began with a bang right in the very first episode by killing a character named Hari Dhar.
What led to Hari's death in Industry?
It is discovered in episode 1, that Hari had unfortunately died in the bathroom after suffering a fatal heart attack. Hari was a college graduate from an immigrant Hindi-speaking family. He worked in the investment banking division of Pierpoint and was determined to succeed by any means necessary.
To keep up, Hari worked long hours, occasionally sleeping in the bathroom and staying awake with the help of Redbull and Modafinil pills. He never socialized with any of his colleagues.
His endless work on the wheels of energy drinks and stimulants had proved too much for him. After a brief moment of acknowledgment from Pierpoint, the business moved on.
How did Hari's death set up the rest of the storyline?
The leaders are upfront with the expectations: six months from now, half of them will be gone. Under pressure, loyalties and personal relations are tested. Pierpoint & Co. has an aggressive work environment where the characters begin to be deceitful with others.
Hari's death in the Pierpoint & Co. bathroom created a ripple effect on the show right to the end of the season.
The inhuman response from the company after Hari’s death sends the graduates into shock, most of all Harper. She thinks about quitting but then takes it upon herself to do justice to Hari's memory. She understood how difficult it was for Hari in a particularly cutthroat business that is difficult for women and people of color.
Though Hari as a character does not have a great significance on the show, his death provides an array of opportunities to introduce new twists.

Actor Nabhaan Rizwan plays the exhausted Hari in the show.
He's a British actor who has appeared in Informer, The Accident, 1917, and Station Eleven. Recently, he's been seen as Dionysus in the 2024 series Kaos.
