In just three episodes, Creature Commandos proved itself to be one of the most ruthless DC shows. The adult animated series, which marks the inception of the DCU, revolves around a team of monsters who take down villains that are too dangerous for humans.

In the third episode, which aired on Max December 12, 2024, the show delved into the origin story of G.I. Robot. Voiced by Sean Gunn, the droid is a World War II-era robot who was created to kill nazis.

The character became a fan favorite due to his innocence and humane personality despite being a machine. However, G.I. is killed off in Creature Commandos episode 3, leaving the audience shocked.

In the Creature Commandos episode Cheers to the Tin Man, G.I. Robot gets into the spotlight. The episode showcases his origin story, depicting how he was built during World War II to kill Nazis, and was a part of Sgt. Rock’s Easy Company, where he earned the nickname ‘The Tin Man.’

Despite being a machine, he became a trusted and valued member of the team. However, after the war, he was left with no purpose. He spent decades locked away, going from being studied to being shut and waiting to be utilized again.

When he finally gets to work within Task Force M, he is sent to protect Princess Ilana from the sorceress Circe and her army, the Sons of Themyscira. During the battle, Rick Flag tells G.I. Robot that Circe’s men are Nazis, which triggers him.

G.I. Robot is overjoyed to have a mission again and charges into battle. As he goes on a killing spree, Circe strikes back and destroys him. His head is blown off and his body is split into pieces. His lights fade away while Nina Mazursky, one of his closest friends, holds his head.

His final words are “Cheers to the Tin Man,” a phrase his Easy Company comrades used to cheer him up with. But his voice cuts out before he can finish the sentence. G.I. Robot’s unceremonial death saddens his friends and surprises the viewers.

Though G.I. Robot has met with a tragic end, fans are hoping he could make a return in Creature Commandos. Considering that he is a robot, his software code and programming could be saved somewhere.

Hence, his consciousness can be transferred to another droid, which could be a more enhanced version of the robot. Showrunner Dean Lorey has also hinted that G.I. Robot’s death might not be permanent as he is not ready to give up on the character yet. He said in an interview with ScreenRant:

“I'm not ready to say goodbye to him either! He's my favorite character. I love G.I. Robot, and I would be brokenhearted if we didn't find a way to see more of G.I. Robot. I wouldn't give up on G.I. Robot.”

However, series creator James Gunn has highlighted that he does not kill off characters for the surprise factor. Talking about G.I. Robot’s end in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the creator said:

“I'm never going to kill a character just for shock value, and I'm never going to keep someone alive if the story calls for that person to die.”

Gunn also pointed out that G.I. Robot’s death might not even have a greater purpose in the overall plot. He said:

“The hard thing for Creature Commandos is when we lose these characters, a lot of times it's just a f****** waste. Not that it's a waste of this character, but it's not for any reason. It's because sometimes death happens when we don't want it to, and sometimes it doesn't lead to a greater purpose.”

By killing off a main character in the very first series of the DCU, the makers have hinted that nobody is in the franchise, which is significantly going to raise the stakes for the superheroes.

Creature Commandos airs new episodes on Max on Thursdays.
