The much anticipated MCU series Daredevil: Born Again is off to an emotionally crackling start. Born Again brings back the much-loved Marvel superhero Matt Murdock’s alias, Daredevil, to the screen after almost seven years.

The show wastes no time as it kills off Matt’s best friend Foggy Nelson in the first episode. Bullseye, on a path to seek revenge, shoots Foggy in the chest, leaving behind an anger-filled and grieving Matt.

While there were discussions about Foggy’s death to take place in the background, Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane ensured that the fans are part of the whole storyline. As per Variety, Scardapane said:

"If something this Earth-shattering is going to happen, we have to feel it. This is more than an inciting incident. This is an earthquake. This has ripple effects through the entire story."

Daredevil: Born Again, which premiered on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, brings back Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Foggy Nelson as Elden Henson, Wilson Bethel as Bullseye and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk / Kingpin among others.

What happened to Foggy in Daredevil: Born Again?

The first episode of Daredevil: Born Again opens to a celebratory setting with Matt, Karen and Foggy at Josie’s bar. But that does not last long as Benjamin ‘Dex’ Poindexter also known as Bullseye is looking to seek revenge. Foggy gets a call from a client apologizing for giving information on him to Bullseye.

Foggy, who was outside the bar with Karen, is shot in the chest by Bullseye with a sniper rifle. Bullseye tries to take out Karen as well, but Matt as Daredevil stops him and a fight ensues.

They both end up on the roof when Matt hears Foggy’s slowing heartbeat. When Foggy’s heartbeat stops and Matt realizes that his best friend is dead, he throws Bullseye from the rooftop to the street, breaking Daredevil’s rule against killing.

Of course, Bullseye survives the fall, thanks to the experimental surgery in his skeleton he gets after being paralyzed in Daredevil season 3 finale. The show moves to one year in future, wherein Matt is still in mourning.

How will Foggy’s death impact Daredevil?

Foggy was like family for Matt and his violent death will have a significant effect on his character development through the series. Daredevil could be heading to a darker path trying to cope with the tragedy.

Speaking about the repercussions of Foggy's death, Cox told Variety:

"It’s really hard — it’s sad. The good news is that it’s got to be iconic. We’re back with a new show, so you’ve got to be big, brave and bold. You’ve got to do something different and shake things up. So, likely, there has to be a casualty, and sadly it is Foggy. It’s devastating on a personal level and for the characters. I always think about Foggy Nelson as being kind of the heartbeat of the MCU. We lose a lot."

Daredevil fans took to social media to express their shock.

"No way they killed off a main character and then time skipped past all the grieving?! Foggy I love you!"

Another fan said on X,

"Foggy dead, 1 year time jump, Matt isn’t Daredevil anymore, Venessa the new crime boss, Fisk is Mayor, Karen left NYC to San Francisco, Bullseye still alive and its only been 1 episode."
