NBC's long-running procedural Chicago Fire has had many cast exits, but Jimmy Nicholas' Chief Evan Hawkins' time was very short on the show. Still, he managed to win many hearts with his earnest portrayal of a paramedic chief.

While Hawkins often butted heads with his co-workers initially because of his rules and discipline in Firehouse 51, he was later welcomed by his colleagues at the fire station.

He also found love on Chicago Fire with paramedic Violet Mikami, and the couple faced every challenge bravely that fate threw their way.

But sadly, they couldn't be endgame in the show as Evan died after one season while saving a civilian in a theater fire. Nicholas was sad to leave the show after just one season, but his character highlighted the perils of a firefighter's profession.

More on Evan Hawkins on Chicago Fire in our story.

Evan Hawkins was introduced in Chicago Fire Season 10

Nicholas Evan as Hawkins was introduced in Chicago Fire Season 10 as the Paramedic Chief, who was following his father's footsteps. He was a no-nonsense paramedic who always played by the books, which often caused friction between his co-workers. But eventually, he adjusted to the ways in Firehouse 51.

He sparked a romance with Violet, and after some thought, the two finally started dating in Episode 13 after sharing a passionate kiss an episode before. While Violet had her fears about this relationship because of their professional relationship, Evan protested against it, and Violet eventually gave in.

However, trouble followed the couple eventually, as Violet suspected, with Evan being accused of favoritism towards Violet. He was also blackmailed by Violet's then-partner, Emma Jacobs, who asked her to give Violet's position; otherwise, she would file a negligence report against her.

Her threats were at their peak, but eventually, she was fired from her job after she fled from a dangerous call.

Meanwhile, Evan was transferred after this incident, and the couple thought the distance would prove good in their relationship.

But fate had other plans, and the couple's time together was very short. On Evan's last day, the team was called to assist in a burning theater.

On the call, Evan noticed a civilian struggling to exit the building amid the chaos. He went to help them, but before they could exit the building, they were crushed under rubble. While Violet tried to resuscitate Evan, it was too late, and he died.

Violet was completely shattered by his sudden death, the only consolation being that the hospital was able to revive the civilian Evan had saved.

While Nicholas became a part of the show for only one season, his character was important to the show to highlight the dangers of this profession and how paramedics and firefighters put their lives on the line every day.

Talking to NBC Insider, Nicholas talked about the Chicago Fire fanbase and how everyone was so welcoming towards him:

"I’ve been super thankful for the support throughout my time [on Chicago Fire]. I’ve just felt only support, and that’s a very rare thing in the business, to feel pure love from fans. That’s not normal at all, so I need to soak this in and be grateful. But then, obviously, it’s incredibly sad..."
