Nic Nevin was a nurse at Chastain Park and the wife of Dr. Conrad Hawkins, played by Matt Czuchry. Unfortunately, her story ended tragically in The Resident Season 5, leading to her emotional departure from the show.

In Season 5, Episode 2, Conrad receives terrible news that Nic has been in a serious car accident while driving home from a spa getaway.

By Episode 3, the full impact of the crash is revealed. Nic suffers a severe brain injury right after the accident. As her condition worsens, doctors confirm that her brain is herniating, meaning there is no chance of recovery. In the end, they have to declare her brain dead. Her father, Kyle, is devastated and blames Conrad as he couldn't save her.

Nic’s sudden death leaves Conrad alone with their baby daughter. Nic had given birth in Season 4, and her pregnancy on the show matched Emily VanCamp’s real-life pregnancy at the time.

Why did Emily VanCamp leave The Resident?

Even after her death, Nic’s kindness and generosity live on. As an organ donor, her organs help eight critical patients and improve the lives of many more.

Kit, one of the doctors, reminds everyone that Nic will continue saving lives through her donation. Despite his pain, Conrad agrees:

“This is what she wants, so this is what I want,”

Emily VanCamp decided to leave the show after four years. A big reason was the birth of her daughter, Iris, with her husband, Josh Bowman.

She explained:

“I spent so many years on network television, but then suddenly priorities shifted. I think there comes a moment in every woman’s life — in every person’s life — where it becomes less about work and more about family, and that’s what happened while I was making the show.”

The COVID-19 pandemic also played a role in her decision:

“Doing that many episodes in a different city and then you add COVID to that, most of us couldn’t see our families for almost a year. It really solidified for me that family is where my heart is at the moment.”

Despite leaving, she still has love and respect for everyone on the show:

“It’s such a bittersweet moment for me. I loved doing The Resident so much for the four years I was on it. Oftentimes you hear about someone exiting a show because something bad had happened or there was some bad blood. But in this case, it’s the exact opposite.”

She added:

“There’s nothing but love and respect between all of us, and this decision was not an easy one for anybody. But it was the right one for me, personally. I’m grateful that I was met with understanding and compassion.”

Nic Nevin’s death was one of the most heartbreaking moments in The Resident. Her tragic accident left Conrad as a widower and single father, but her selfless organ donation helped save many lives.

Emily VanCamp’s decision to leave was personal, as she wanted to focus on her family, and she remains on good terms with the cast and crew.
