Focusing on the lives of first responders, 9-1-1 is back with its eighth season on Fox. The procedural drama closely monitors the pressure handled by police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and dispatchers regularly due to emergencies.
The drama also delves into the personal lives of its main characters like Buck, a young firefighter who often faces challenges in his personal life, and Athena, a dedicated patrol sergeant with the LAPD who struggles to manage her work and family responsibilities. Each character in 9-1-1 has their own struggle as first responders and individuals.
While first responders are the main focus of the Fox TV show, it also introduces viewers to some manipulative figures, one of whom is undoubtedly Doug Kendall played by Brian Hallisay. The actor joined the cast of the Fox TV series in Season 2 as Maddie Buckley's (Jennifer Love Hewitt) abusive ex-husband.
Interestingly, Hallisay has been married to Hewitt since 2013 and continues to embrace their married life. However, in the procedural drama, Doug is a villainous character and the reason for Maddie's trauma and pain.

Who is Doug Kendall in the Fox drama 9-1-1?
Doug Kendall, the abusive ex-husband to Maddie first appeared in 9-1-1 Season 1 and emerged as one of the most toxic characters. As seen in the drama, Doug became the second-youngest Chief of Cardiothoracic Medicine, but it was his abusive nature that defined him.
Maddie eventually escaped her toxic marriage and began to rebuild her life away from Doug in Los Angeles. Little did she know that her decision to start fresh would become the foundation for Doug’s obsessive pursuit.
Doug tracked down Maddie and even began stalking her under the alias Jason Bailey and infiltrated her life. He befriended Maddie's co-worker and friend Chimney and later left him injured after learning about his date with Maddie.
In one of the intense moments in 9-1-1, Doug kidnaps Maddie, takes her to an isolated cabin, and tries to control her. Despite the threatening situation, Maddie fights back and in an attempt of self-defense, she ends up killing Doug.
Though Maddie never intended to kill her ex-husband, she freed herself from a stalker and abusive man. However, the trauma and scars caused by Doug left lasting effects on her.

Doug reappeared in 9-1-1 Season seven
It was in the 9-1-1 Season 7 Episode 6 "There Goes the Groom" when fans were shocked to see the return of Brian Hallisay as Doug. Since the character was killed by Maddie, it was hard to believe how he came back to life.
The episode centered around Maddie and Chimney set to walk down the aisle, but their wedding took a dramatic turn when Chimney, who was suffering from a viral infection went missing. His illness resulted in feverish visions, and one of them was seeing Maddie's ex-husband Doug.
Turned out, that Doug didn't come back to life but reappeared in 9-1-1 through Chimney's visions. It was a crucial part of the episode as it reflected Chimney's internal struggle. This creative decision was also addressed by Kenneth Choi (who plays Chimney) in an interview with TVLine. The actor explained that the episode:
"Needed to have someone like Doug to serve as Chimney’s counterpoint."
Despite the chaos, the episode wrapped up with Maddie and Chimney's awaited marriage. He also had a vision of his late cousin Kevin, adding to the emotional side of the episode.
