The latest Dateline NBC series, The Smoking Gun, hosted by Andrea Canning, premiered on October 3, 2024 (8 p.m. EST). The name of the new episode is In Cold Blood, which follows the story of Kim Dorsey, who was discovered dead in her house on Eastbury Drive by her husband, Derrick Dorsey.
The incident took place in October 2012. Shortly afterward, the forensic investigation revealed DNA found in Kim's genital tract, matching a 33-year-old man named Lance Eugene Kirkpatrick.
Detectives arrested Lance, who was charged with first-degree murder and sexual assault of Kim Dorsey. According to reports, he used a pool cue and a knife as the murder weapons. Following his trial, the State of Florida imposed three life sentences (without parole) on Lance.
Derrick Dorsey, Kim's husband, testified in court and spoke about the loss of his wife, saying:
"There was not a mean bone in her body. That's the woman he took from me."
According to reports, Kirkpatrick, who was hired by Derrick, had been living with the Dorseys. An argument from the prosecutors suggested that Lance broke into the couple's room to steal some money to pay off a debt. During the robbery, he was caught by Kim, and according to his statement, he accidentally killed her in a heated argument.
However, the autopsy revealed that Kim was raped by Lance before being murdered. Her hands were tied using zip ties, and Lance slit her throat with a knife. Whether the sexual encounter between them was consensual or not remained uncertain.
