Yellowstone Season 5 has been recklessly killing off fan-favorite and important characters. The streak started with the death of John Dutton (Kevin Coster) in episode 9 of the fifth season.

Yellowstone Season 5 Episode 12, Counting Coup saw the death of Colby Mayfield (Denim Richards), which takes the death toll on Yellowstone Season 5 to 3 as Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) was shot in the head in episode 11.

The death of this beloved side character has left the fans emotionally scarred as Colby, in his attempt to save young Carter (Finn Little), got killed by a horse. His death has naturally hit the Yellowstone characters pretty hard given the rampage that their lives have been in this season.

Colby has been a part of Yellowstone since the very first day and over the gradual progression of the seasons, the character and his friends have become quite popular and loved. Therefore, seeing this bunkhouse boy die tragically in an accident was difficult for the characters as well as the viewers.

As Carter was working with the horses in the barn and tending to them, he noticed the “man-eating” black stallion knocking over his water. Being the person he is, Carter took the risk of helping the animal and successfully slipped inside the stable and slipped out of there with the bucket.

However, when he came back with the bucket filled and got inside the barn, he got cornered by the horse with no possible escape route. Shortly after this unfortunate incident, Colby rushed into the barn, shouting Carter's name.

Carter responded to him and Colby saw his face had been bloodied and the horse was getting more and more agitated with each passing moment. Promising to help him, Colby told Carter to stay very still and advised,

“When I push him back, you crawl out as fast as you can.”

While this ensured a safe exit for Carter, he did not manage to return in time to shoot the horse and Colby was fatally kicked by the animal, resulting in his death.

Following his death, Rip Wheeler got the phone to let Colby’s girlfriend Teeter know about his death. Teeter was naturally shaken and offered a kind of eulogy during the drive back to Yellowstone. She said,

"He's a cowboy. Suffering is the job."

Colby is given a rightful place at the Yellowstone Ranch cemetery, which seems to be getting a little crowded at this point. Teeter keeps Colby’s hat as his memory.

How do different characters react to Colby’s death in Yellowstone?

Rip reached the barn quickly after hearing the shots and found a devastated Carter with the dead Colby. He then had to call both Ryan (Ian Bohen) and Tetter, Colby’s best friend and girlfriend, who were at 6666.

While carrying Colby’s body, Carter has a breakdown and the people at 6666 embark on a dark ride home. Ryan tells the team members,

“A stud got Carter down, kicked Colby when he went in to help. It was quick. Never saw it coming.”

When Ryan tries to assure Tetter that Colby’s death must have been without suffering, she tells him being a cowboy meant he would have to suffer but she simply wished that he had suffered a little more so that she could properly bid him farewell.

Colby’s death also brings forward a tender side of Beth as she opens up to Carter about her first pregnancy with Rip which not even Rip is aware of. She tells Carter that he should spend the night with his family and when he says he does not have a family, she simply tells him,

“Sure, ya do,”

which is almost the warmest of Beth that the show has seen. While Colby’s death has severely affected the characters, it also shows that no one is really safe in the Yellowstone universe and with only a few episodes left till the finale, anything is possible.

Yellowstone can be streamed on Peacock.
