Some of the most confounding death cases of all time have been covered in Unsolved Mysteries, one of which was Cindy James's case. A few years before her death, Cindy encountered numerous deadly situations and always believed that someone around her wanted to kill her.
Cindy was in her 40s when she separated from her husband Roy Makepeace in 1982 and was working as a nurse. She received numerous mysterious phone calls and threatening notes and was even attacked several times.
Years later, on May 25, 1989, Cindy James disappeared and her friends and family started to search for her. The police couldn't find her the same day, but her car was found with blood stains on it, hinting at a possible attack on the woman.
The next month, on June 8, 1989, Cindy's dead body was discovered in Richmond, near Vancouver lying in the yard of an abandoned house. Her legs and hands were tied up and a nylon stocking was found around her neck.
The Unsolved Mysteries case shook everyone including the police as they initially thought Cindy James had been murdered by someone until the autopsy results came out. The report suggested that Cindy died of a drug overdose, claiming to be a suicide.
Did Cindy James commit suicide? Exploring her death featured in Unsolved Mysteries
As shown in Unsolved Mysteries, the autopsy reports claimed that Cindy James died of suicide after taking an overdose of morphine. However, her parents and the private investigator she once hired when Cindy was being threatened refused to believe that she took her life.
Per Unsolved, Cindy's father Otto Hack claimed that the police did not investigate thoroughly on his daughter's case, and concluded her death was a suicide. He also mentioned:
"There is no way that she could have been able, after ingesting that amount of drugs, to tie herself up."
Hack added:
"There was absolutely nothing at the crime scene to indicate that she had used any form of syringe, or she had used any drinking device, or anything of that nature."
Following her divorce in 1982, Cindy James reported almost a hundred complaints of harassment and threats. It was revealed in Unsolved Mysteries that she couldn't save herself from numerous threatening notes outside her house, and unknown phone calls, and was once even found lying down with a nylon stocking around her neck.
A similar nylon stocking was found when Cindy's dead body was discovered, making her death one of the most puzzling Unsolved Mysteries cases. Cindy also hired a private investigator, Ozzie Kaban, who also believed that Cindy was killed and did not die of the dr*g overdose.
In 1988, just a year before she died, Cindy James was brutally attacked by someone. She was found unconscious and even went into a coma but luckily survived. But the very next year, the 44-year-old nurse met a tragic end and her cause of death remains unsolved.
Was there any suspect in Cindy James's death case?
Even though Cindy's death was claimed to be a suicide and no one was arrested over her murder, there were two initial suspects. Since she encountered all the terrifying incidents after her divorce, her ex-husband Roy Makepeace became the first suspect.
Cindy James also had a lover and policeman, Pat McBride, was also suspected of her murder. However, there was no concrete evidence that could prove either of them killed Cindy James and was proven innocent.
Despite her years of suffering and encountering deadly attacks, as seen in Unsolved Mysteries, Cindy James' death remains a mystery.
