Fans were expecting not one, but two goodbyes after the 9-1-1 Season 7 finale. While Captian Bobby suffered a major heart attack, Christopher Diaz decided to leave his father and live with his grandparents in Texas.
There were speculations about who among the characters would not make it for another season. Christopher will not join the others for the show's next season, as we see in the finale as he says an emotional goodbye to his father.
Actor Ryan Guzman, who plays Christopher's father on the show, accepts that Eddie's involvement with a woman who looks just like Chris' dead mother without informing him is not fair to the son.
While their relationship will also affect Chris in the future, he deserves to know. Christopher's exit from the show is completely justified. He took some time off for his mental health by staying away from his father. Everything about his exit from the show is in our story.
Why did Christopher decide to leave Eddie in 9-1-1?
Christopher Diaz (Gavin McHugh) has played Eddie's son on 9-1-1 since Season 2. After being a main character on the show for so long, it seems like Christopher is ready to say goodbye to 9-1-1 and his father, Eddie.
This all starts when Christopher catches his father, Eddie, cheating on his girlfriend, Marisol, with a woman named Kim, who looks strangely similar to his late mother and Eddie's wife, Shannon. Troubled by this, Chris locks himself in his room and calls for his grandparents to take him with them to Texas.
While Eddie's parents empathize with their son, who is coping with the loss of his late wife, they also see that Christopher needs to be away from Eddie at the moment. While Eddie is reluctant to send his son away, he understands this is for his best.
''I think there is a full acknowledgement that Eddie is not the best part of Christopher’s life anymore, that he does not offer the best and healthiest version for Christopher anymore...the acceptance of that fact is something that I don’t think Eddie has really leaned into [yet]. We will explore it in season eight,” Ryan Guzman on his caharcter's seperation from his son
The season 7 finale saw the father saying goodbye to his son, who is moving to Texas. While Chris is still angry at Eddie, the latter invites him back to L.A. whenever he is ready.
Which characters return on 9-1-1 Season 8?
Fans were also worried that Captain Bobby Nash, who has appeared on the show since Season 1, might say goodbye following his heart attack in the penultimate episode of Season 7. A fire breaks out in Bobby's house, which leads to injuries and a heart attack for him.
The heart attack that left Bobby on life support was speculated to be the character's exit from the show. But, Bobby will be a part of Season 8, as McHugh is the only actor officially exiting the show's seventh season.
Actors Angela Bassett (Athena), Oliver Stark (Evan “Buck” Buckley), Alisha Hinds (Henrietta “Hen” Wilson), Kenneth Choi Howard “Chimney” Han), Jennifer Love Hewitt (Maddie Buckley), and Ryan Guzman (Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz.) all returned for Season 8 which premiered on ABC on September 26, 2024.
