Season 2 of The White Lotus took its audience on a wild ride through sham, self-discovery, and unforeseen twists.
Among its many exciting storylines, Albie’s fate stood out as one of the most fascinating. Played by Adam DiMarco, Albie started the 2nd season as an unrealistic, tender-hearted young adult, but by the end, he had been cheated out of 50,000 euros and was left to question his own innocence.
Yet, despite being conned, his story did not end in downright anguish. In its place, he found a startling sense of conclusion —both in his romantic misfortunes and his damaged family relations.
Albie’s costly romance with Lucia in season 2 of The White Lotus
With The White Lotus season 2, Albie’s ruin started when he met Lucia (played by Simona Tabasco), an attractive and apparently helpless Sicilian sex worker. From the very beginning, he was charmed by her, influenced by the thought that she desired his help.
Lucia stated she had to pay off some money to an intimidating pimp named Alessio, and Albie, frantic to be the one to save her with his savior complex, requested his father, Dominic (played by Michael Imperioli), for financial help.
At first, Dominic saw through and through, but Albie sugar-coated the arrangement by proposing that he would speak to his mother on his father’s behalf.
Since Dominic was in the midst of trying to mend his relationship with his wife after committing infidelities, Albie’s offer became an offer he could not say no to. Ultimately, Dominic settled to hook up Albie with the 50,000 euros, regardless of having doubts about his son running straight into a scam.
As anticipated, the next morning, when Albie wakes up all alone, Lucia had disappeared, feeling with all of the money Albie had given her. The supposed “pimp” was found nowhere, verifying that the whole story had been nothing but a made up lie and a con. Later, when Albie meets Portia (played by Haley Lu Richardson) at the airport, he confesses, “I got played.”
Despite the financial loss in the second season of The White Lotus, Albie appeared to look as if he had recognized his fate with an unexpected level of simplicity, maybe accepting that he had been existing in a make-believe fantasy all along.
A family bonding moment & maybe a second chance at romance?
While Albie’s romantic adventures concluded with dishonesty and fraud, his journey wasn’t completely futile. His relationship with his father grew throughout the season, going to an unanticipated moment of connection. Regardless of their dissimilarities, Albie and Dominic share a raw moment of understanding at the airport, suggesting a change in their dynamic.
Another turn in The White Lotus season 2 was Albie’s reunion with Portia. Earlier in the season, the two of them had exchanged a fleeting romance before she went on to another guest at The White Lotus, but fate—or total coincidence—got them to meet again. Their airport conversation had an almost rom-com-like feel, suggesting the probability of a new start for the two of them.
Even actor Adam DiMarco, who played Albie, was surprised by how Albie’s story got its closure. While at an interview with Variety, he reflected;
“I had a bad feeling when I was reading it with the Lucia thing and the 50,000€. Then Alessio, this pimp, came out of nowhere... As a reader, I was kind of hesitant for Albie. I was kind of protective of him. But as an actor, all of that was really fun to play.”
Albie’s character arc at The White Lotus was a little bit harsh, but it was required for him to realize his mistakes and get an essential reality check.
While he lost his father’s money and was conned, he walked away with a brand-new perception of the world around him and, maybe, a much better understanding of himself.
Whether his relationship with Portia leads to something romantic or not, one thing is clear—he won’t be so effortlessly tricked next time.
