Shark Tank Season 16's fourth episode aired on November 8, 2024, and featured various products. One of them was 1920, a utility-patent convertible clothing/ fashion brand. Entrepreneur couple Ashley Sankar and Zach presented their unique brand on Shark Tank Season 16.
1920, aka NineteenTwenty, is a brand that primarily focuses on jackets and skirts. However, these are not ordinary clothing. 1920 clothing's USP is that it can be transformed into pillows, bags, or even totes. As the couple pitched, such unique multifunctional jackets and skirts could be convenient for everyday users.
Ashley and Zach's initial ask was $250,000 in exchange for their company's 10% stocks. It was for their company 1920, valued at $2.5 million. Seeing a unique concept from the entrepreneurs, judges Robert Herjavec and Kevin O'Leary expressed their interest, and Robert secured an investment in the 1920 clothing brand.
1920 official website describes founder Ashley as:
"After serving 9 years as a Logistics Officer in the United States Army and gaining over 11 years of intense supply chain experience, she finally decided to be bold and carry through her love for fashion and design."
Shark Tank Season 16: What happened with the 1920 clothing brand?
The fourth episode of the latest Shark Tank season featured a 1920 clothing brand from former US Army logistics officer Ashley Sankar and her husband, Zach. As seen on the reality show, the couple pitched their unique and interesting product, which, at a glance, might come off as warm clothing. However, it was much more than that.
Inspired by Ashley's busy lifestyle, which involves frequent traveling, she developed certain clothing items, which later turned into NineteenTwenty. As the couple pitched their products and clothing brand on Shark Tank Season 16, they mentioned their "convertible jackets."
In a demo, the duo showcased how to wear the jackets. They could be turned into a tote bag, pillow, or blanket when not worn. They have a capacity of approximately 20 pounds, and one of the hoodies/ jackets could also be converted into a body bag.
The manufacturing cost for a Classic Mid Puffer Jacket was around $65 - $70, and the retail price was around $298. Additionally, a video that went viral on social media showcasing how the jacket was worn in New York City got 66 million views.
The company has been selling since December 2022. In its first month, it made $78,000. In 2023, it reached $269,000; with $157,000 in 2024, its overall income was $505,000. From that, net profit was $97,000.
1920 Clothing made $750,000 in annual sales for the current year, from which the estimated net profit was around $350,000. All these profits were achieved without any marketing. However, as Ashley pitched, Mark Cuban was out because he felt the numbers were not working.
"One of the biggest challenges is fully understanding accounting and managing your cash flow," shared Mark.
Next on Shark Tank Season 16 was Daniel Lubetzky, who felt that the market for clothing brands was too competitive; hence, he was also out.
Kevin O'Leary asked why Ashley and Zach were not pursuing 1920 as their primary business. He also told them that they were not giving their brand their full attention and that their company resulted in a lack of customer acquisition. Still, he offered $250,000 for 30% equity.
Robert Herjavec was interested in making a potential investment and asked for $250,000 for 25% equity.
"I'd rather have 70%, 72% of something than have 100% of nothing. We came to make a deal," shared Ashley while accepting the offer.
Despite Ashley's counteroffer for 20% equity, Robert was adamant in his 25% counteroffer, which the entrepreneur duo later accepted.
