Since the release of Squid Game Season 2, fans cannot stop discussing the survival thriller and the new challenges it features. At the heart of the competition is Lee Jung-jae's Gi-hun (Player 456) who thought the games would be the same as before, and it would be easier for him to save lives.

However, the challenges are still based on children's games but have undergone a significant transformation. Squid Game Season 2 has impressively spotlighted traditional Korean games, and among them is Gonggi (or Gong-gi (공기) which has sparked global interest.

Gonggi is a playground game that challenges players' hand-eye coordination and dexterity. Typically played with five small stones (now colored and fancy), it involves a quick throw, catch, and pick up of the stones in a precise order.

This traditional Korean children's game is introduced in Season 2 Episode 4 "Six Legs" in which the next challenge is the six-legged pentathlon. To win Gonggi, each member of the group must contribute by taking turns and playing a mini-game at every ten-meter mark.

If they pass one mini-game, they qualify for the next round to complete the six-legged pentathlon. There are a total of five mini-games: Ddakji, Flying Stone, Gong-gi, Spinning Top, and Jegi.

The players are given just five minutes to cross the finish line, injecting fear and anxiety among them. However, when it comes to Gi-hun's group during the third round of the pentathlon, Player 388's impressive skills in Gonggi steal the scene.

More about the traditional Korean game, Gonggi featured in Squid Game Season 2

After watching Squid Game Season 2, fans around the globe are curious to explore the traditional Korean games. As mentioned above, the six-legged pentathlon starts in Episode 4 and ends in the next Episode 5 "One More Game" in which Kang Ha-neul's Kang Dae-ho (Player 388) stuns his teammates including the Front Man (who's pretending to be player 001).

The scene is going viral on the internet, especially on social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X as fans share their reactions and curiosity to know more about Gonggi. While the game might seem a bit complex and challenging for some fans to follow, it's considered one of the most interesting children's games in Korea.

The game has five distinct rounds with increasing challenges. In the first round, the player only tosses one stone in the air, picks up another from the ground, and then catches the airborne stone. This way, the player continues increasing the number of stones to be picked up and dropped until the final backhand catch.

Since Squid Game Season 2 is about deadly children's games, the addition of Gonggi adds to the tense atmosphere as players need both physical skill and mental sharpness to succeed. Its representation in the Netflix series offers a unique blend of nostalgia, competition, and cultural homage.

Per The Chosun Daily, Park Jong-nam shed light on his experience while filming the scene and also highlighted Kang Ha-neul's supportive nature. He shared:

"It wasn’t difficult since the entire sequence was shot in one take, but it was nerve-wracking to perform with the actors... Now that it’s out, I hope Squid Game continues to succeed. Fighting!"

The team was able to wrap the scene in just two takes, but Jong-nam also felt the tension. The expert was contacted in 2023, just a few days before his wedding. Despite his busy schedule, Park Jong-nam signed the agreement.
