The Matlock Season 1 finale that aired on April 17 left behind a host of burning questions for the upcoming Season 2. Season 1 of the show ran for 17 episodes full of unexpected twists and turns as Madeline "Matty" Matlock infiltrates big-time New York law firm Jacobson Moore in an attempt to figure out who suppressed documents related to the dangers of prescription opioid drugs. Her passion for this truth stems from the fact that the truth about these documents could've had the drugs taken off the market and saved thousands of people who've become addicted and overdosed because of the drug.
In the two-hour-long finale, Matty (played by Kathy Bates) is forced to work with Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), her former friend and current boss. Just as these two women fall back in love with each other's friendship, Olympia discovers something in the finale that pushes everything into chaos.

Here's how Season 2 of Matlock might look after the surprising events of the first season.
What can we expect from Matlock Season 2 after the events of Season 1?

CBS's law drama left viewers on a cliffhanger in the Matlock Season 1 finale episode titled Tricks of the Trade. Creator Jennie Snyder Urman teased about the Season 2 finale that
"The season 1 finale sets up everything. In season 2, you’ll get the answers that we’ve been promising."
The biggest reveal of the Matlock finale was the Jacobson Moore partner, Olympia, using Matty's tricks of the trade to find out if her ex-husband, Julian, was truthful about the trust he received access to to buy their dream home. Julian finds the papers and excitedly phones Matty to tell her that Julian was not guilty and he was being honest, but after the call, she discovers the exact papers regarding the Wellbrexa studies, which Matty was looking for. As soon as Olympia finds these papers, Julian also enters the scene to beg her not to reveal the secret, which would bring their whole family and careers down. He asks her to
"Don’t let me be defined by the worst thing I ever did"
As Matty waits for Olympia to bring her the papers that prove Julian's innocence, her doorbell rings, but it's a stranger at her door and not Olympia. The stranger (played by Niko Nicotera) tells her that he is their grandson Alfie's father.

Everything is in chaos in Matty's personal and professional life. Season of Matlock will have to explore how Olympia goes about revealing the truth to Matty or if she decides to keep her ex-husband's secret and save their professional careers. She will have to choose between the truth, her friendship, and her ex-husband, the father of her children.
On the other hand, Matty, who is used to being in control, suddenly has to tackle a whole new problem regarding the man who is claiming to be Alfie's father. She will be forced to allow a man who possibly is or was an addict when he knew Ellie. Here's what the showrunner had to say about Matty's position at the end of Season 1 and the start of Season 2.
Maddie’s a character that thrives on control. Like, our whole season was built around this concept of her in control — she’s steps ahead of the audience, she steps ahead of the characters, we’re flashing back to what she knew and what we didn’t know — and we’re leaving her in the end out of control. She is emotionally blindsided by this person on her doorstep, and Olympia now has Information that Maddie doesn’t have, so suddenly we have a character who had everything mapped out and under control whose life starts to become out of control. Seeing what Madeleine Matlock is like under that kind of pressure is going to be really interesting.
Season 2 of Matlock will be picking up right where Season 1 has ended, so it will be interesting to see how Olympia and Matty go about these revelations. Along with Olympia and Matty, it will also be interesting to see how David's (played by David Del Rio) and Sarah's (played by Leah Lewis) storylines play out in Season 2.
Sarah just ran lead on and won her first big case, but Simone is already planning on how to take her down and get her fired from the firm. Billy, on the other hand, who was planning on enjoying his single life for the foreseeable future, just found out that his girlfriend, almost-fiancée, is pregnant. It will be interesting to see how Matlock Season 2 plays out with these twists. Will Hot Billy Summer still be a thing, or will he go back to choosing someone over himself and taking responsibility for this pregnancy?

Most of all, it will be interesting to see if Matty and Olympia's friendship survives. Here's what the creator had to say about this:
"We are shaping it as though it’s an epic love story over the course of seasons. Depending on what Olympia does with the document, it controls how their relationship will unfold. You’re really watching two people who love each other. It’s all really complicated right now and Matty loves Olympia. The question is, ‘Can Olympia forgive Matty?’ That’s where we lose them at the finale. Matty loves Olympia and if she could preserve the friendship and land the plane on her crime mission, that would be perfect."
We certainly cannot wait for Season 2 of Matlock to explore all of these characters and their possibilities.
