Yellowstone has finally come to a close following five highly successful seasons. Among the various fan theories circulating about the season five finale of Yellowstone, one particular theory suggests that the events of the finale were somehow foretold by the Dutton prophecy. The theory further eschews that, somehow, the Dutton prophecy could play a determining role in the outcome of the finale and the ultimate fate of the surviving Dutton family members.
The Dutton family prophecy emanated from the Yellowstone prequel series 1883, in which James Dutton was allowed by Native American leader Spotted Eagle to bury his daughter Elsa and settle in the Yellowstone Valley. However, the permission came with a condition. It was made clear to James Dutton that in seven generations, the land given to him would be reclaimed by the descendants of Spotted Eagle.
At that time, James Dutton readily agreed to this condition and settled down on the land. However, with time, and according to the show's lore, the seven generations might have come to pass. Tate Dutton, the son of Kayce and Monica Dutton, is supposed to be the seventh generation of the Dutton family tree. Here's everything we know.
The Dutton Prophecy from Yellowstone explained in detail
Like every other great narrative show, Taylor Sheridan successfully created a shared universe for the Paramount show and its prequels, 1883 and 1923. This effectively allowed him room for foreshadowing details that could then go on to play significant roles in the overall plot structure.
It was first pointed out by fans of the show on the social media platform Reddit that the February 2022 finale episode of 1883 foreshadowed the rise and fall of the Dutton family and the ominous prophecy that would one day come to pass. In the episode, James Dutton and his wagon train are en route to their abortive mission to the Wild West when they encounter Spotted Eagle, the leader of the local Native American tribe.
James' daughter, Elsa, had been shot by a poisoned arrow and was nearing death. In this scenario, James vowed to settle down with his family wherever he could bury his daughter. Spotted Eagle then pointed out the existence of a nearby valley where he used to hunt as a youngster. The valley, he said, had harsh winters, but the summers there were bountiful and thriving.
Thereafter, Spotted Eagle told James Dutton about the prophecy that in seven generations, his people would rise to claim the land back from the Duttons. It is interesting to note that if the Dutton family tree is considered, John Dutton's grandson Tate, the son of Kayce and Monica, happens to be the seventh generation of the family. Monica, incidentally, is Native American.
Yellowstone Executive Producer opens up about the finale
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Christina Voros opened up about the show and the season five finale. Referring to the Dutton prophecy, she commented:
"I think it’s hard to say how much to read into it because there are so many threads dangled between these worlds that one could follow the path of. So I think the context of Yellowstone, within the historical saga that Taylor has been creating, is sort of the centerpiece. But the storylines are extending from it in many different ways.”
Yellowstone airs exclusively on Paramount.
