In Invincible Season 2, we see Darkwing operate in Midnight City (the show's version of Gotham). However, this Darkwing is revealed to be the original one's sidekick, Nightboy. However, this version of Darkwing is different than the one we watched die at Omni-Man's hands in the season 1 premiere. This version of Darkwing, or Darkwing II, killed his opponent, unlike his predecessor.

In that second Season episode, Darkwing II traps Invincible inside a different realm called the Shadowverse. It is a dark, colorless void consisting of unknown and seen monsters. Darkwing II finally relents and lets Mark out when the latter holds the former hostage in the realm. Then, Mark knocks Darkwing II unconscious and takes him to Cecil, believing that the murderous vigilante will be imprisoned.

However, as we learned in the first episode of the third season, Darkwing II is working for Cecil, and so is D.A. Sinclair., immediately earning Mark's ire.

Similar to Prime Video's fellow superhero show The Boys, Invincible is also a pastiche of beloved superheroes across the Marvel and DC Universe. In the Season 2 finale "I Thought You Were Stronger," we also saw Mark being sent across multiple dimensions by the villain Angstrom Levy.

In one dimension, Mark comes across Agent Spider fighting Prof. Ock, an imitation of Spider-Man and Doc Ock, respectively. In another, we see Mark interacting with a silent and standing hero with only the lower part of the cape in the frame. Initially thought to be an alternate version of Darkwing, Mark's dialogue makes it clear that the silent hero is none other than The Dark Knight himself.

This moment is funny because Invincible's Darkwing shares a lot of similarities with the World's Greatest Detective from the DC Universe. Darkwing's and Batman's costumes look similar, except for the lack of ears on Darkwing's cowl. He even has a fellow crimefighter, Nightboy, who takes over his mentor's moniker. The Darkwing seen in Season 1's first episode hurt criminals but had a no-kill rule.

But Darkwing II doesn't share his predecessor's distaste for killing. When he is introduced in the second season's second episode, we see several of Midnight City's criminals' corpses being hung out in the open in full display to scare them from committing crimes. Darkwing II would've murdered his opponent if Invincible had not intervened.

After knocking out Darkwing II unconscious, Mark dropped the vigilante to Cecil, believing that the former would be incarcerated for his murders. But that's not the case.

What is Invincible's problem with Darkwing II?

Throughout the previous two Seasons of this popular Prime Video series, one thing is clear. Unlike his father Omni-Man, Invincible possesses an iron-hard sense of what's right and what's wrong. He is upset by Cecil, as the latter is working with a murderous vigilante like Darkwing II. He is further hurt by learning that apart from Darkwing II, the director of GDA has also employed D.A. Sinclair.

When Mark confronts Cecil about working with these two, Mark himself is trapped inside the white room and attacked by Sinclair's Reanimen. Mark flees to the Guardians for help, and they help him fight these zombie super soldiers. Realizing his folly, Cecil deactivates the Reanimen. But that's too late because Mark quits, and Guardians also break apart.

Rex, Monster Girl, Bulletproof, Rae, and Robot quit the team as they don't believe in Cecil anymore. Conversely, Immortal, Shapesmith, Black Samson, and Kate stay behind as they still trust the GDA director.

Do you think Mark is right to distrust Darkwing II? Find out the answer to this question by watching the third season of Invincible on Prime Video.
