After a wait of almost three years, Severance Season 2 is finally here with its Episode 1, which has raised even more questions for the fans.
In the Season 2 premiere, Adam Scott's Mark is working on a mysterious file with a picture of his wife, Gemma, labeled Cold Harbor, showing that he is 68% complete.
Lumon company employees have been working on some numbers since Season 1, but nobody knows what they are, and this Cold Harbor file has added to the show's mystery.
One of the possible theories about Lumon's mysterious work has always been cloning, and goats also strongly support this theory. So, are they actually cloning people, and Mark is unknowingly studying his own wife?
More on Cold Harbor in Severance Season 2 in our story.
Mark is seen working on a file named Cold Harbor in Severance Season 2
Since Severance Season 1, the Lumon employees have been working on mysterious files with numbers, and Cold Harbor appears to be another of them. But this time, the file on Mark's system has a picture of his wife, Gemma, with weird symbols and numbers. Just below the file name, it also shows that Mark is 68% complete in whatever he is doing.
One possible theory relating to that file could be that all files in the show are named after a particular town. For instance, Mark worked on a file named Allentown in Season 1, and his work was highly praised and rewarded for that. Cold Harbor could be another place name in the show's universe with important ties to Lumon. In addition, Cold Harbor was also the working title for the show, so naturally, it holds significance.
Secondly, the file also shows different human vitals, like 80 beats per heart rate and 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit temperature, which again hints at the most popular Severance fan theory that Lumon is cloning people for artificial intelligence, and these are Gemma's vitals, which they are monitoring.
But since Gemma is dead, it could also be that they are trying to resurrect her, and every Lumon employee has to start this experiment with someone they know.
Reddit fan theories relating to Cold Harbor in Severance Season 2
Some fan theories on Reddit, u/sspellegrino96, allude to the fact that Mark is unknowingly cloning Gemma, and the five boxes at the bottom of her image represent the five human senses:
''I think he’s real-time neural mapping her tissue and refining the sensory pathways of memories, five senses = five bins, and each bin has four tempers to categorize memories''
Expanding on the location-specific theory, many users, like u/BlueBrusselSprout, also think that each file represents a place, and Cold Harbor is important because it is the birthplace of human heredity, which is what Lumon is doing in Severance Season 2:
''Cold Spring Harbor, NY is the birthplace of the eugenics movement and human hereditary research in the early-ish 20th c. It was really rocking and rolling in the 1920s especially. They were committed to "race betterment."
Another popular fan theory, like u/Leading-Aide-8468, suggests that Lumon is trying to resurrect their founder, Kier Eagan, and all the employees are experimenting with someone they know; for instance, Mark is working on Gemma. This would be because the company is still working on his vision:
''I think Helly is the first step towards resurrecting Kier. I think Mark is working on Gemma because he knows her. I also think Irv is working on a relative (maybe his dad?) and not sure about Dylan.''
While all these theories are interesting, only time will tell what Cold Harbor actually is and what is going on in Severance Season 2.
