Outer Banks concluded its Season 4 with a tragic death. Season 4 Part 2 followed Pogues' adventure to hunt for The Blue Crown.

Since the show is reaching its conclusion in Season 5, the stakes were very high for the gang, especially because they were up against this season's and the show's most dangerous antagonist, Chandler Groff.

We see him ruthlessly stabbing his son JJ while holding Kiara at gunpoint, which leads to his death. Chandler's fatally stabbing JJ in cold blood reveals his villainous potential, as he is a sociopath who cannot stand happiness.

The absurdity of his action, when JJ had already handed him the treasure, further adds a complex layer to his character. He killed JJ for the sake of it, deriving no monetary benefit from it.

More on Chandler Groff and his role in Outer Banks Season 5 in our story.

Chandler Groff is the most dangerous antagonist till date on Outer Banks

According to showrunners Jonas Pate and Josh Burke, they wanted a tonal shift for Outer Banks Season 4, and Chandler Groff is the perfect antagonist to provide that. Not only does he kill his son, JJ, but the whole banality of his act is absurd.

While JJ leaves the treasure for Chandler when he holds Kiara at gunpoint, showing that he values relationships more than money, Chandler kills him even after getting the Crown.

This shows how deeply flawed his character is, who blames JJ for leaving him to die in the well when he has previously framed him for murder.

According to the creators, Chandler's motives will become more apparent in Outer Banks Season 5, but he kills JJ because relationships don't matter to him-

''Chandler hates JJ’s joy. He is such an unhappy person that he sees that JJ actually doesn’t need it, and that drives him insane...He kills JJ after he has the crown, it’s completely pointless; it’s banal, almost''

However, there are no doubts about the cruelty of his character who murders his son and feels no remorse for it.

Chandler's villainous potential will be fully realized in Outer Banks Season 5

Since Outer Banks Season 5 is the show's final season, the creators wanted to create a sociopathic villain who wants to threaten the Pogues' personal relationships. While the first three seasons consisted of a treasure, the final season changed the gang's priority.

As the season ends with Kiara and the gang announcing 'revenge' against Chandler, Season 5 will fully reveal Chandler's evil motives and the potential he will go to harm Pogues.

''When we were conceiving the [Chandler] character, we zeroed in on the dark triad personality traits and wanted to create almost a sociopathic character that would have hard enough edges...We needed to re-conjure a formidable villain quickly''
You’re right to point out that it seems gratuitous, and some of the work of season 5 is going to be going back and understanding why he did it. ''

Season 5 will be one final showdown between the Pogues, who are trying to avenge JJ, and Chandler, who is fully realizing his villainous potential.

The creators have also teased that Season 5 will bring even more complexity to his character as fans will learn why he did what he did, and the emotional stakes for the gang will get even higher.

Outer Banks will return for a final season on Netflix.
