After a successful first season, Goosebumps has returned to enthrall horror and supernatural fans a second time with season 2 of Goosebumps: The Vanishing. Season 1 premiered on October 13, 2023, in time for Halloween on Disney+ and Hulu. As the name suggests, the series is based on R. L. Stine's popular book series from the 1990s.
The first season took inspiration from the book series, and the second season, Goosebumps: The Vanishing, followed the same pattern. However, season 2 is not a continuation of season 1. It follows a new set of cast and characters like Anthony Brewer, played by David Schwimmer, and his teenage twins Devin and Cece, played by Sam McCarthy and Jaden Bartells.
Although the series doesn't follow the books to the T, it does take heavy inspiration from a lot of them. As can be seen in Goosebumps: The Vanishing, which is partially based on the second book of the Goosebumps series named Stay Out Of The Basement that came out in 1992.

Goosebumps: The Vanishing is partially based on R. L. Stine's second book
The story of Goosebumps: The Vanishing follows two teenagers and their friends who unknowingly try to unravel secrets about the disappearance of four teenagers from 30 years ago. The new anthology series introduces the character of David Schwimmer's Anthony, who is based on R.L. Stine's book Stay Out Of The Basement. He mistakenly unravels a mysterious creature while looking into the case of his older brother's disappearance. However, his children find out about it.
In the original story, Dr. Brewer encounters a real plant monster, but in the show, it is suggested to be a mysterious creature. While the series has taken many creative liberties, the core essence of the highly popular book remains the same. Such as the father unraveling a creature in his basement, the children being suspicious of him, and eventually uncovering the truth.
Goosebumps: The Vanishing is an anthology series and is not a continuation of the first season. But just like season 1, it doesn't take inspiration from just one book of R. L. Stine's Goosebumps series.
Other books that inspired Goosebumps: The Vanishing
As mentioned above, the main story of Goosebumps: The Vanishing is based on the second book of the Goosebumps series, Stay Out Of The Basement. It doesn't stop at that. There are several other elements taken from other books of the Goosebumps series.
For example, the show has used elements from Welcome to Camp Nightmare (Book 9), The Ghost Next Door (Book 10), and The Girl Who Cried Monster (Book 8). However, just like Stay Out Of The Basement, these books are used for infusing the element of the story into the episodes but not the story itself. The show takes liberty in its storytelling by incorporating various elements from different Goosebumps books to create a unique and engaging storyline for Goosebumps: The Vanishing.
