1944, the third spin-off series to Taylor Sheridan's neo-western drama series, proves that he is nowhere done with his hit Paramount+ show Yellowstone.
Yellowstone Season 5 ended in December 2024, after much controversy following Kevin Costner's exit from Season 5 Part 2, which led to his character, John Dutton's death. Two other Yellowstone prequel series, 1883 and 1923, were released, which expanded on the Dutton's history on the ranch and expanded on the franchise.
In addition, a sequel series titled The Madison and another centered around Beth and Rip are also in the works. With many Yellowstone spin-offs coming around the corner, 1944 stands unique to others, as it might directly lead to John Dutton's birth.
The series might focus on the Dutton family as they navigate the years through World War II, which happened around the show's timeline.

1944 will be the third prequel series to Yellowstone
Expanding on the Yellowstone lore, Sheridan is all set with a third spin-off series, titled 1944, which is set just 21 years after 1923. While there is a considerable amount of time between 1883 and 1923, the newest prequel series will pick the events after 1923 Season 2.
While no plot and cast details are out, the show's title is interesting enough, which helps the fans situate the show during an important time in American history. Given that Spencer Dutton from 1923 fought in World War 1, the war setting is nothing new to the Yellowstone franchise, and the 1944 title suggests that the show might follow the horrors of World War II.
The show is also very close in the timeline to Yellowstone's patriarch, John Dutton's birth, who was born in the 1960s. The show might also lead up to his birth, an interesting plot point in the Yellowstone franchise.
Costner's controversy with Sheridan robbed the fans of an appropriate farewell to John's character, and Sheridan might make up for it by showing the fans his childhood in the third prequel.
Characters from 1923 can make an appearance in 1944
Considering the huge gap between 1883 and 1923, no characters from the first prequel make an appearance in the second.
However, since 1923, season 2 is scheduled to premiere on February 23, 2025, and it will likely focus on Spencer's journey, he will be the main character in season 2. He will journey to reunite with his wife, Alex, and Jacob and Cara Dutton to save their land and ranch.
1923's conclusion opens doors for Spencer's character to return in 1944 as his older self, and his wife Alex might also make an appearance. Considering Yellowstone spin-offs primarily focus on Dutton's future generations, the third prequel might focus on Spencer's children, who might follow in their father's footsteps and fight in WWII.
In addition, the WWII backdrop provides ample storyline for the characters, and the show can explore the ranch life while a world war rages on.
