The White Lotus has been a successful show since its first season. Viewers have loved to see how chaotic life gets for the rich guests at the luxurious hotel. As the season finale of the third season is coming up, fans have been making theories about how the season might end. To make sure no one guesses the ending, executive producer David Bernad and director Mike White had written multiple fake endings to make sure no one finds out the real one.
David said in an interview with People,
“We have fake endings to the scripts. So we wrote up — we have six different endings — and we kind of distributed fake endings to people just in case someone leaked anything, and then we could say there’s different fake endings,”
How did The White Lotus's producer prevent spoilers for Season 3?
Writing fake endings is a hilarious yet effective way to ensure no one gets any spoilers about the season or the finale. Many suspect Belinda to get murdered, Gaitok to do something impulsive, and Timothy to betray his family. Thankfully no spoilers about The White Lotus Season 3 finale have been leaked yet. It might have been if the creators had not taken one crucial step.
There is always a risk of someone seeing the filming of The White Lotus finale or even recording parts of it. David addressed this exact worry when he said,
“And then when we shot the ending scene, it’s a locked down set. So no one really has access to what we were shooting and there would be no non-White Lotus participants ever seeing what we’re doing,”
“But we were shooting at the Four Seasons, a scene with Jon Gries, and there was people looking and filming from a room. They didn’t know that what they were filming was sensitive, and I was really scared they were going to post it. So I had the hotel manager go and bring them over to the set and I kind of schmoozed them and got them on my side,”
David elaborated on the matter.
One might wonder how they convinced the people in the room to respect their wishes. David explains,
“[We] were like, ‘We got to make them part of the experience,’ so that I could get them to delete all the footage they had. They unknowingly didn’t realize they were filming something that was very sensitive,”
Not only the crew, but also the cast members of The White Lotus were equally dedicated to protecting the secrets. Bernad recalls,
“Jon was really committed to keeping the secret,” he says. “And when we were traveling and entered Thailand, he, one time, rode with the equipment in a bus, instead of flying the 45 minutes or whatever it was. I think he drove like, 12 hours from Phuket to Bangkok.”
Despite all the precautions and steps taken to prevent spoilers from getting leaked, viewers are still making their own theories. They might not be backed by facts or confirmation from creators but are interesting nonetheless. It's like every viewer of The White Lotus is a detective trying to solve a murder that has not yet happened. Perhaps this is why the show is so well-liked. Your first thought is not who killed. Your first thought is who died and why.
Given the ups and downs this season, The White Lotus Season 3 finale is going to be a much-awaited one. David says,
“But it’s all world-building and character-building. The reason people are so invested and are so emotionally moved by it all is because of that world-building and slow build. It’s like a great novel. You got to get people invested and connected, and then the ride begins,”
While all details about The White Lotus Season 3 finale are still kept secret, there is quite a buzz about what might happen. Viewers have watched all these episodes just to see the ending, and David Bernad thinks people will like the end product when he says,
“People only remember the ending. The finale, I think I’m really proud of,”
The season finale of the third season of The White Lotus comes out on HBO and Max on 6th April at 9 pm ET/PT.
