Abbott Elementary has been entertaining the audience since 2021. The ABC and Hulu mockumentary sitcom revolves around Janine Teagues, played by Quinta Brunson, a second-grade teacher at a predominantly Black public school in Philadelphia.

As the school is underfunded, the students and the teachers have to face various challenges, but Janine remains firmly positive at work despite the hardships. The Emmy-nominated series features a talented main cast along with some exciting recurring characters who make the story funnier and more engaging.

In Abbott Elementary Season 2, Vince Staples was seen in the character of Maurice, Janine's love interest. However, things do not end well between the two as Janine cheats on him with Gregory.

Vince is an accomplished rapper, known for his hit tracks like Big Fish Theory, Dark Times, and Norf Norf. He ventured into acting with voice roles before playing Maurice in Abbott Elementary from 2022 to 2023.

Vince Staples first appears in Abbott Elementary in season 2 episode 10, Holiday Hookah, as Maurice meets Janine at a hookah bar when he is out with his friend Gregory. He notices Janine sitting alone and decides to go talk to her, even though Gregory tries to stop him.

They chat, exchange numbers, and start texting each other. Maurice lives close to the school, so one day he visits and asks Janine out, and she agrees. At first, Gregory is not sure about their relationship, but he later accepts it.

Maurice tries hard to impress Janine and often surprises her with expensive gifts and impromptu lunch dates. However, Janine remains confused about her feelings for Gregory. Though their relationship continues, things change after Janine and Gregory kiss at a teacher conference.

Janine eventually decides to break up with Maurice. She invites him to his favorite restaurant along with Gregory and tells him the truth. Maurice feels insulted by the move and walks away, calling it a sick move. Meanwhile, he continues to work as a UPS worker delivering packages.

In the final episode of season 2, Janine runs into Maurice and apologizes for how their relationship ended. Maurice tells her that Gregory had warned him not to ask her out, and calls her selfish for cheating on him. Maurice's journey in the show is full of hope and romance, but it ends with heartbreak.

Will Vince Staples return as Maurice in Abbott Elementary?

Vince Staples has not been seen in the show since he last appeared in the season 2 finale. The rapper reflected on his character in an interview with The A.V. Club and revealed that he would love to reprise the role. He said:

“I would love to bring Maurice back to Abbott Elementary. Being the mailman is important to the school ecosystem and to a city’s ecosystem, so I feel like Maurice is still on Abbott.
Every time you see a package, every time something gets delivered, it’s the ghost of Maurice walking through the halls of Abbott Elementary School.”

Vince added that he is willing to make a guest appearance on the show. While Maurice is bitter towards Janine, Vince has nothing but love for the actress and series creator Quinta Brunson in real life. He said:

“Hopefully one day I might be able to be brought back for a small cameo, but I’m just so appreciative of the opportunity Quinta gave me. I just love her to death.
She’s like my family, so I just really appreciate being there, even if it was one episode or however many episodes I end up having or would have had. It was a great experience.”

Following his exit from the show, Vince landed his own comedy series on Netflix, The Vince Staples Show.

Abbott Elementary Season 4 airs on ABC and Hulu on Wednesdays.
