After 11 years of unfeigned comedy and family chaos, Modern Family did not forget to give their fans a clever, Easter-themed episode in its last leg. Aired on April 1, 2020, the sixteenth episode of Season 11, named “I’m Going to Miss This”, Modern Family creators give us a chapter where Easter is used as a backdrop. To keep things more than just egg hunts and bunnies, the episode wittingly talks about change, the art of letting go, and the spirit of renewal. These themes not only explore the beauty of Easter but also fit the imminent finale of the show.

The moving part of the episode in Modern Family centres on Mitchell and Cam, who have bought a new house, only for Mitch to find it difficult to say goodbye to their old apartment. Even though they are growing as a family, he remembers all the time they spent together dancing to diva anthems and solo dances. That is when Gloria decides to take the matter into her hands and enters the scene. She clears out the apartment and unintentionally offends the moving crew and clears out the apartment. Realising that Mitch needs closure, she helps him to say goodbye in a hilariously moving scene. Mitch prepares to do that by dancing through the empty space for one last time, but he is interrupted by Cam and Lily with crucial news- the baby they were adopting has arrived early.

As soon as the news breaks, the whole scene turns panicky, with Mitch and Cam thinking that they are not ready for it. Lily grounds her dada by reminding them that they always manage to compose themselves whenever the situation calls for it. Then comes the best part that makes Modern Family an evergreen show: the scene when they meet their new son. The moment blends perfectly with the emotional depth and benign humour.

Modern Family - Easter and the Dunphys…and a snake in the scene!

While Mitch and Cam were having their heartfelt moment, the Dunphy kids went on to their next funny business with Phil and Claire away on a small trip. Haley, Alex, and Luke throw a house party, and Dylan’s mom takes care of the twins. Things spiral when Alex accidentally spills a drink on a guest named Doug, and he slips. He starts blackmailing Alex to do his chores to avoid a lawsuit, and while all of this is happening, a guest’s pet snake lays eggs in the fireplace – classic Modern Family shenanigans!

This is when the creators decide to bring the Easter Element into play. When Phil and Claire return, they host an egg hunt for the kids in the neighbourhood. Seated among grandparents, both of them have a hard time registering that they are growing old– until Phil learns that an egg in the yard might be the real egg from the party. He rushes to locate it and stuff the egg up in his sleeve before it hatches. And now, he has got a snake slithering across his body in the middle of the party!

Wine and Pritchett Men

On the other hand, Jay and Manny start bonding when Jay finds out that Manny has joined a wine club. Realising that it can help them grow closer and share a conversation, the father-son duo begin a wine tasting experience that turns competitive and ends in a tie. After a sneak peek from Manny reveals that Jay has actually won, this subplot displays their relationship: a bit at odds but rooted in tenderness and affection.

The Modern Family episode might not scream that it is an Easter Episode, but it uses it as a backdrop to deliver a funny, chaotic, and warm chapter. So, can we say that there is a Modern Family Easter Episode? Precisely yes – it delivers more than just a pastel-coloured family comedy.
