Sony Pictures dropped the first trailer of 28 Years Later which is set to hit the theatres on June 20, 2025. As the title suggests, the film takes place 28 years after the events of the post-apocalyptic horror franchise - 28 Days Later (2002) and 28 Weeks Later (2007).
This would be the most awaited reunion of the Academy Award-winning director Danny Boyle and Writer Alex Garland.
This movie is rumored to complete the trilogy and continues the story of the world affected by the Rage Virus, which turns humans into zombies. Additionally, the movie was shot completely on an iPhone Pro Max 15 with additional attachments.
It follows a group of survivors and explores how the virus has impacted society and the psychology of people suffering while also rebuilding civilization and confronting possible threats. The film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O’Connell, and Ralph Fiennes.
Is 28 Years Later filmed on an iPhone?
Yes. Although films have kept testing the capacity of Apple gadgets to execute complex visions, 28 Years Later is going to be the major flex for the brand. The movie is filmed entirely on an iPhone 15 Pro Max with the help of specialized attachments.
Cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle and director Danny Boyle chose this method to give authenticity to the raw and immersive aesthetic of the series.
The shooting was further enhanced with advanced features of the iPhone like the 4K ProRes 60FPS Log video recording, and professional-grade accessories like Panavision lenses and rigging systems.
Shooting on an iPhone perfectly fits with these stories that aim to showcase a bleaker side of the world which is not necessary to look pristine all the time. The phone also comes with an option to save files directly to external storage via USB-C for long-term filming.
Glimpse from the first trailer of 28 Years Later
The trailer gives a horrifying glimpse into where Aaron Taylor-Johnson walks out of a community and ventures outside in England with Bow and Arrow. But the sudden appearance of a skeleton-like zombie had a striking resemblance with Cillian Murphy.
Therefore the film can also be the cameo of the award-winning actor and it might be an indication of the dark fate of Cillian Murphy's character Jim.
The official synopsis of the film reads:
“It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
The trailer suggests a desperate mission depicting scenes of quiet despair and reflection along with some action-packed scenes.
According to reports the film has a budget of US $75 million, despite shooting it without fancy equipment. Its major filming wrapped in August 2024 but the producers ensured confidentiality and prevented the revelation of unconventional camera choices.
