Jamal Roberts wowed the judges on American Idol with his performance on the song 'Heal' by Tom Odell. He was paired with mentor Fantasia, who helped him navigate the rehearsals.
However, she was amazed at how well Jamal could already sing a song that he had never sung before, especially from an artist that he did not even know before coming on the show.
After his performance, the American Idol judges were so impressed that they gave him a standing ovation.
Channeling his inner self through the song Heal, Jamal was able to impress the fans at home as well, who voted for him to be in the Top 10. Taking to X to express their opinions, a fan wrote,
"Jamal. Omg! That man is insanely good. I stood up midway through. Vocals crazy beautiful. I don’t even know that song but now I need to."
"This young black man lost his mom who raised him, lost his grandmother, FATHER not around and still made it! PE Teacher, raising daughters on his own! LORD JESUS cover him! THIS IS A GIFT FROM GOD NOT A TALENT!" a tweet read.
"Jamal hasn’t had a single miss this whole competition, his vocals just get BETTER AND BETTER. This was my favorite performance so far, too. Definitely our winner," wrote a fan.
"Wow, Jamal is so extremely talented. What a powerful performance. And also at the end of the performance when he stops singing, and the lights shone right on him. That was such a perfect moment for such a beautiful performance!" wrote a fan.
American Idol - Jamal Roberts performs Heal by Tom Odell
Starting at the rehearsals with Fantasia on American Idol, the guest mentor for this episode, Jamal, revealed he had chosen to perform Heal by Tom Odell for that night's performance.
Even though she had not heard the song before, and neither had Tom, when he started singing, Fantasia was too stunned to speak. In a confessional, she explained how the words that Jamal had chosen suited him perfectly and "he loses himself in the song.'
Jamal said that he picked this song because the lyrics "spoke" to him. He says he does not care what genre the song he sings belongs to, his entire focus is on inserting himself into it.
Jamal has had a tough life, and he expressed how he tried to feel his pain through the songs. As he ended his rehearsal, Fantasia had tears in her eyes and praised him for the voice, saying there was something about him that stood out.
Later on the American Idol stage, before Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, Jamal performed his rendition of Heal. The crowd could not help but cheer on him between every pause that he took.
Lionel couldn't help but throw his hands up in the air because he was so shocked and amazed while the judges gave him a standing ovation.
American Idol season 23 episodes can be watched weekly on Sundays and Mondays at 8 PM Eastern Time on ABC. Later, the episodes are available to stream via Hulu.
