Netflix has made it official: Rachel Weisz is set to star in and executive produce an upcoming show based on Julia May Jonas' popular book, Vladimir. This will be a limited series with eight episodes. The story is teeming with dark humor, deeper psychological elements, and a rather bold storytelling.

Tracey Pakosta, Netflix’s Vice President of Comedy Series, talked about the show:

“With Kate Robin’s expertise in crafting layered, darkly comedic female stories, a script that deftly examines the complexity of attraction and moral ambiguities, and the incomparable Rachel Weisz leading the cast, this project is a powerhouse collaboration of talented women.”

Netflix's Vladimir series will be based on a novel of desire, power, and obsession

Julia May Jonas' Vladimir is a highly acclaimed book known for its sharp writing style and its fearless look at power, desire, and moral grey areas. The story is about a literature professor whose life gets complicated when her husband's past sexual misconduct comes to light. On top of that, she becomes obsessed with a younger colleague, also named Vladimir.

The Vladimir novel looks into the topic of female desire, the potential for self-destructive behavior, and the results of indulging in taboo thoughts. This debut novel has been a hit, making it onto several best-of-the-year lists from places like People magazine, Vulture, Kirkus Reviews, and LitHub.

It's been compared to other books like Lolita and Notes on a Scandal because it also looks at obsession and ethical dilemmas in an academic setting.

Netflix has picked up this novel to turn into a show, which is a smart move because there's a growing interest in psychological dramas with morally complex female leads. Rachel Weisz will help with themes like obsession and temptation, her performance is likely to be as engaging as it usually is.

Rachel Weisz has a history of complex roles

Rachel Weisz is known for playing intense, complex characters. She's won an Academy Award for her role in The Constant Gardener (2005) and got a lot of praise for her work in The Favourite (2018) and Disobedience (2017).

She was also seen on Amazon Prime Video's Dead Ringers (2023), another show where she plays a character who doesn't do what you'd expect.

Her career is full of surprising women. Rachel Weisz continues to explore strong, morally complex female characters with her role in Vladimir. This comes after her success in Amazon’s Dead Ringers, where she portrayed two characters in a spine-chilling version of David Cronenberg’s 1988 psychological thriller.

Her skill in combining vulnerability with a commanding presence makes her the perfect fit for Jonas’ lead in the upcoming project, Vladimir.

In addition to acting, Weisz will serve as an executive producer. This means she'll help shape the show's direction and feel. Kate Robin, known for her work on Six Feet Under and Dead to Me, will co-write the series. Fans can expect dark humor, deep emotions, and clever social commentary.

Netflix hasn't given us an exact date for when Vladimir will come out, but since they're already working on it, we can probably expect it to be out around the end of 2025 or the start of 2026.
