Mel and Jack's relationship in Netflix's original Virgin River is no less than a rollercoaster ride, which began soon after Melinda Monroe or Mel (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) moved to the small town named Virgin River after losing her husband and recovering from past traumatic experiences.
However, her arrival in the town was not so good. Being a nurse practitioner from Los Angeles, Mel was assigned to work with the town's local doctor, Doc Mullins, who didn't seem to be happy about working with Melinda Monroe. Mel then crosses paths with Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) and as they get closer, their lives get complicated.
Virgin River currently has five seasons, and the sixth was greenlit in 2023. Fans have been waiting to watch more of the small-town romance, and when asked if Virgin River season 6 will arrive in 2025, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith assured that won't happen while speaking to Glamour.
This is exciting news because it was believed that the next installment would hit Netflix in 2025, but now it looks like we can enjoy the rural love saga in season 6 in late 2024.
When will Virgin River season 6 come out on Netflix?
Though Virgin River season six was greenlit last year, the series has faced major delays due to the writer's strike. The show revolves around the relationship of Mel and Jack, along with other supporting characters in the small town.
The series received a commendation for its comforting storyline and how Mel and Jack always chose each other at the end, despite facing significant challenges in their relationship.
In the same interview, Patrick Sean Smith also shared that the upcoming season does not have an exact release date yet and said:
"I don’t know. We don’t have an exact date yet, but I know that everybody is working towards trying to get us back in front of the cameras as quickly as possible. But as to when that is next year, I don’t know yet."
But if you think that the Netflix series will take another year to come out, then know that Smith is "going to do [his] darnedest to make sure that doesn't happen". Despite facing delays, the drama series has ensured a smooth run of its five seasons, and we're expecting the upcoming season to arrive sometime in December 2024.
What is the plot of Virgin River season 6?
Though Virgin River season 5 ended with a happy moment between Mel and Jack, it also included major cliffhangers and shocking revelations. Fans and viewers saw Mel finally confronting her biological father and also helping Charmine in giving birth to her twin boys.
The finale of season 5 also featured Preacher in a tough situation as he faces legal troubles following the discovery of Wes's body. Additionally, Lizzie announced her pregnancy which might lead her to tie the knot with Denny.
The showrunner also spoke with Deadline and stated,"Their [Mel and Jack's] pursuit of parenthood will play prominently in Season 6." Smith also confirmed in another interview with TV Line, that viewers will now see Doc and Hope in good health conditions compared to their issues featured in the fifth season.
Hope will be seen gathering new opportunities in her life after she navigates through significant challenges due to the distressing brain injury she sustained from a car accident.
How many episodes will Virgin River season 6 have?
In the same 2023 interview with Deadline, showrunner Patrick Sean Smith said that the team is "probably looking at a 10-episode season moving forward" and does not plan to end the romance drama until all stories are covered and the characters' arcs are fully resolved.
The titles of the ten episodes have not been disclosed, but we know that season 6 will undeniably captivate fans with a fresh narrative while solving each cliffhanger left in season 5's finale.
