The unexpected romance between Lila and Five in The Umbrella Academy season 4 was a complete shocker not only for fans but also for the actors who portrayed them. The popular action-comedy drama, revolving around the dysfunctional Hargreeves family has finally ended after four seasons.
However, the sudden change in Lila (Ritu Arya) and Five's (Aidan Gallagher) relationship in the final season, didn't sit well with many fans, as they believed Diego (Lila's husband) didn't deserve to be cheated by his own brother and beloved wife.
Arya joined the cast of The Umbrella Academy as Lila Pitt in season 2, and since then she played a significant role in the lives of the Hargreeves siblings, notably Diego, with whom Lila tied the knot. Despite being married with children, and having known Five when he was a kid, Lila didn't think once before starting a romantic relationship with Five.
While talking about Lila and Five's new relationship in an interview with Radio Times, Ritu Arya shared that she initially thought the writers were joking. The actress said:
"one of the writers accidentally told me that that was going to happen at the premiere last season, and I thought that they were joking... I literally laughed, and I was like, 'Haha,' and then when I read the script, I was like, 'Oh, they weren’t joking!"
Following Arya's reaction to the unexpected relationship dynamics between Five and Lila, Gallagher also mentioned that he also had a "similar reaction" to Ritu Arya, but gradually understood that it was required to reflect their current situation and personalities.

The pair tries hard to survive in the loop and this forced isolation brings them together, initiating a completely different and surprising twist in their relationship.
While the two are stuck together, they share a kiss and romantic moments. Both, Lila and Five were aware of her marriage with Diego Hargreeves, and how much he loved Lila. But despite that the two chose to love each other as they navigated through various challenges.
Till season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, Five and Lila didn't have a great relationship. They often found themselves conflicted with each other, and never spent time together until the fifth episode of season 4.
What happened when Diego found out about Five and Lila's relationship in Umbrella Academy Season 4?
After spending seven years together in the time loop, Lila and Five finally got back with their family, but felt a bit awkward, as they were hiding a big shocker about their relationship.
When all the Hargreeves siblings excluding Ben are present together, Diego feels suspicious about the awkward silence between him and Lila. He even discovers that Lila replaced his bracelet with the one given by Five, and asks her if she loves Five.
Diego and Five started a feud as Diego was filled with rage and betrayal. Lila stops them and starts explaining to her husband that she's been with Five for almost seven years, and they tried hard to get back home.
However, before Lila could have explained her situation with Five to everyone, they saw the news about Ben in danger. Their conversation is disrupted as the siblings have to save Ben and save the world from another apocalypse.
How did fans react to Lila and Five's romance in The Umbrella Academy season 4?
Lila and Five's kissing scenes became quite controversial on the internet as many viewers didn't feel the need to witness a sudden change in their relationship. Fans shared their opinions on social media, notable X (earlier Twitter) and shared:

While many fans and viewers didn't seem to have liked how Lila and Five grew closer, showrunner Steve Blackman explained in the same interview with Radio Times that Lila and Five aren't poles apart.
They did have a conflicted relationship throughout the previous two seasons, but when they experienced isolation together, the two realized having a lot in common.
