Shark Tank investor Robert Herjavec recently took to his Instagram, to share a personal story and motivate his followers through it. Robert has been on Shark Tank's panel for a long time now and he and Mark Cuban are friends.
He often shares reels and videos on his personal social media accounts to encourage and educate the audience based on his life experiences.
He has also shared about his life story previously and revealed that his family immigrated to Canada when he was a little kid. He had to work his way up to build an empire that he currently owns.
Sharing his story about Shark Tank's Mark Cuban and his motivation, Robert started with,
"One thing I learned from Mark Cuban is that two jets are better than one, but who cares?"
Shark Tank's Robert Herjavec shares an anecdote about purpose
Robert Herjavec began the jet story by pointing out the materialistic value that people often give while they are working towards something. He gave in to that one time but soon got out of that thought process. Explaining further, Shark Tank's Robert revealed,
"Years ago, a bunch of us sharks went to a high school and all these kids, I mean, we were rockstars to kids. It's one of the great things about shows. We make business cool and fun. So all these kids are in the audience and they're asking questions. And you know I'm the funny one on the show. I mean, it's a very low bar."
The high school had arranged for the students to ask sharks questions and Robert shared that one of the kids asked something that got him thinking about where his mind is headed. He said,
"And so one of the kids ask me a question. He says, 'Robert, why do you work so hard? You seem to work all the time.' And I do. I work all the time. I love what I do. And I was trying to be funny but there is an element of truth to it. And I say, 'So I can buy a bigger jet than Mark.' Because at the time, Mark's jet was way bigger than my jet. And without even pausing, you know what Matk says? 'Which one?' It really took me for a loop."
This was when Shark Tank's Robert says he realized that the "purpose" of his working and "building something great" wasn't to buy more stuff or bigger things or compare himself to other successful folks around him.
Clearing out, he also explained that buying things is a good feeling but that cannot be labeled as a "purpose" of working hard. Continuing further, Robert explained,
"And I realized, Mark doesn't have one better jet, he had three. And then I realized, who cares? Why do I care about what Mark has and why am I doing it? I didn't start my business to get more stuff. I love stuff, I love to play, but I did it, to build something great. You gotta have a purpose and go back to your purpose."
Shark Tank's Robert advised his followers to not go after the materialistic assets while trying to build something great and instead, have a "purpose" derived from passion. Buying things is a bonus but should not be the main priority of it all.
Robert, in one of his previous videos, revealing more about his life, told his followers how he became successful. It was not an overnight process and he said it was all because of the mistakes he made. He learned from them and made sure that it did not get repeated. This is his secret and what brought him so far in life.
Shark Tank airs on ABC at 8 PM Eastern Time every week on Fridays.
