Tulsa King and Yellowstone have little in common, but both shows were developed by the same creator, Taylor Sheridan. What they have in common is a richly decorated Western setting and some big-name leads.
It is possible that the creator wanted each show to live in the same universe. Belonging to the same sub-genre: the anti-hero crime drama. Yellowstone is a neo-Western series that premiered on the Paramount Network in 2018, starring Kevin Costner and Luke Grimes. It spawned an entire universe between 1883 and 1923, all of which follow the Dutton family at different times.
Tulsa King is the story of a New York Mafia capo, "The General" Manfredi, who moves to Tulsa, Oklahoma. While the themes are similar to Yellowstone, the tone with which they are approached is quite different.
In this article, we shall take a deeper look into the similarities and differences between the shows, which are Sheridan's creations.
All similarities and differences to note between Tulsa King and Yellowstone
Similarities
1) Both shows are set in a disturbed setting
Yellowstone is about the issues surrounding the Dutton Ranch, a huge cattle ranch, the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, Yellowstone National Park, and land developers.
Tulsa King is about the mafia king, Dwight "The General" Manfredi, an American Mafia boss who has just been released from prison in New York and is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he begins to put together a gang to commit crimes.
2) Both shows depict a power struggle
Dwight's storyline in Tulsa King is introduced through his efforts to build his empire. As he does so, he seeks out new allies. Later, he gains enmity with an outlaw biker gang, with whom his relations turn sour.
Yellowstone is a family saga about the Dutton family, their personal struggles on the ranch, and the tense dynamics between the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, Yellowstone National Park, and developers.
3) Both shows have incorporated Neal McDonough
Neal McDonough comes on board in the second season of Tulsa King as an antagonist. This character is a familiar and well-worn one from Yellowstone. He played Malcolm Beck, the tough Montana Liquor Board opponent, in the second season of Yellowstone. It's a great match for the mafia character of Neal McDonough is good at playing unpleasant characters, and his skills should make him a menacing opponent.
Differences
1) The two shows have different themes, settings, and tones
Set in Oklahoma, Tulsa King is a crime-comedy-drama about former New York City capo Dwight "The General" Manfredi, who tries to set up a new crime operation in the small town of the title. Yellowstone has some neo-western and family drama elements, combining mafia and Western elements.
Given the two shows' very different tones, characters, settings, and themes, it is safe to say that Tulsa King has nothing to do with Yellowstone.
2) Both shows are set far away from each other
Both shows are filmed in different states and locations. The show starring Sylvester Stallone was produced in Montana, while Tulsa King was shot in Oklahoma and had no similar scenic background.
