Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban has built a reputation for staying ahead of the curve regarding new business opportunities and technology. He has always kept his eye on the next big thing, such as streaming media or high definition television.
Talking about AI on Your Mom's House Podcast, Mark says that his focus is on this new technology, not just as an investor, but as a person who is trying to learn and get the most out of it.
During this conversation, the Shark Tank investor spoke about how AI right now is similar to past technological revolutions. He reflected on how the tech industry has evolved over the past years and thus, according to him, AI is simply the next step in a long history of digital transformation.
However, Mark also noted that AI is not the same because of how unpredictably it is compared to other tech developments. While he has an image of being an investor in new startups, with AI, he has decided to take a different path.
Rather than simply funding AI companies, he has decided to understand the technology first. Talking about the same, the Shark Tank investor said,
“Yeah, but more importantly, I’m just trying to learn it—learn what the possibilities are. For kids, this will be native to them. For us, we’ve got to put in the effort to learn. My Instagram feed used to be sports, sports, sports, business, whatever. Now it’s AI hack, AI hack, AI hack. New AI software, new AI software. Because it’s changing so rapidly. But to me, it’s fun. It’s fun to learn.”
Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban talks about his interest in learning about AI
The Shark Tank investor, Mark Cuban, urged the listeners that even though curiosity and adaptability are important regarding AI, they "should have fun with it."
Further, Mark predicted that AI will shape the business world, and how people consume information and learn it. Speaking about new software such as Google's Notebook LM and AI podcast tools, his reaction was not fear for existing industries but curiosity about new opportunities.
He also talked about how kids these days are not "big readers," but this does not mean the younger generations are learning less; they are just learning differently. Mark wants to adapt to the same and sees AI as a tool that can enhance the education system and streamline the research process.
Looking ahead, the Shark Tank investor does not care whether AI will change the world, but he asks who will drive that change. Talking about how the past has changed, he said,
"Look at what you’re using right now. You guys have been in radio forever, in the industry forever. Think back—when you started, they played records, and there was a DJ who just spoke. Then all of a sudden, there were different playback systems… Technology has always influenced every industry. It’s no different now.”
His philosophy of the future of AI is similar to the words of Steve Jobs, whom he referenced in the discussion. He said,
"Steve Jobs used to say everything is a remix. You take what’s already in place, add value to it, and get it to the next stage.”
Mark's approach to AI is logical and forward-thinking. He understands it is not just another tech wave but something here to stay and cause a shift in industries. By learning about it, he is developing himself as an investor and an active participant in shaping the future.
