Netflix's miniseries Toxic Town, reinvestigated the real-life Corby waste mismanagement case of the 1990s, where the town's mother filed a lawsuit against the Council for exposing them to toxins, which resulted in birth defects in their children.
After three intense episodes, in which the women tried their best to make a case against the council and the council tried their best to cover up, all eyes were on the finale.
The Toxic Town finale builds tension through a courtroom trial, where the mothers finally learn that the Council might win this case by using an alternative equation that will prove that the dust particles did not reach the pregnant women.
This last-minute curveball took Des and the group by surprise and they began making their calculations to win the case.
Here is everything that happened in the Toxic Town finale.
Explaining Corby council's faulty mathematics in the Toxic Town finale
After Des gets a tip that informs him that the Council is using an alternative mathematical equation to prove that the dust particles did not travel to the affected mothers, he begins his calculation.
He reaches out to a scientist to prove that the Council's equations are flawed, who tells them that his assumption is correct but he will need a specific German paper to prove it. After much effort, Dani finally finds the paper.
The paper consists of a government-sponsored report on the coal industry, which the Council's scientists used to prove that the dust particles are big enough that they cannot reach the affected women. However, her equation missed a digit, which makes the calculation faulty and inconclusive.
While Des and the team can prove this, it still did not prove negligence on the Council's part, and that is where they brought in a risky witness, Ted, the engineer.
While Ted was a risky witness because of his firing from the council, he still was an important witness because he knew the dirty workings of the plant and had also warned and flagged them while working there. He testified about all the manipulative PH numbers of the soil, poorly made membranes, and the mismanagement of untreated waste dumped into ponds.
Tracey's stand added a layer of depth to the Toxic Town finale
The finale was packed with tension as the audiences were rooting for the mothers they had seen fighting for their children for three episodes. In addition to the eventual court trial, Tracey's added story, and she had to be excluded from the case to increase their chance of winning, added another layer of intensity.
While Tracey's case could not be included, she still was a key witness, and Susan and the others needed her testimony to prove their case. While the finale starts with uncertainty on Tracey's part, she eventually takes a stand and exposes the dirty waste management of the council, explaining how the dust covered everything and trucks transported waste in the open.
What was the eventual verdict in the Toxic Town finale?
With the initial setback with Tracey and the faulty calculation, the mothers now had the ball in their court.
The Judge finally ruled in their favor, saying that the Corby cluster proved that the toxins released from the plant's waste affected the pregnant women. In addition, the foetal medicine report proved that the toxins caused the defects in the children, which makes the Council responsible for this crime.
In reality, the Corby Borough Council was asked to make a settlement payment of £14.6 million.
