The police procedural drama, Will Trent, quickly became one of the fan-favorite shows due to its intense and complex storytelling. It revolves around a Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent, Will Trent, played by Ramón Rodríguez, and his life while he deals with his complicated past as a child who grew up in a foster care system.

Rodríguez’s Trent is not the only character with a complex story, as several other characters in the show have also gone through some life-changing situations that helped in further changing their character arc. For instance, in season 1, Jake McLaughlin’s Michael Ormewood was not a character that fans liked much.

However, his life has gone through many changes, like the recent storyline of him discovering a brain tumor, which has shaped his character arc further and made the viewers feel empathetic toward him.

More on this in our story.

Ormewood’s character arc went from being the worst character to one of the best in Will Trent

McLaughlin’s character, Ormewood, a homicide detective, was introduced as one of the least impressive characters, as he was mostly an obnoxious individual. Moreover, his lack of showing sympathy toward victims, even after being a homicide detective, worked against him.

Added to that was his corruption and the cheating that broke his marriage. In season 2, Ormewood discovers that his wife, Gina, has been cheating on him. This was the first turning point in Ormewood’s life, who had always taken Gina for granted.

The cheating broke their marriage and also Ormewood, who began to reflect on his life and his own actions. Just like Will Trent, Ormewood also used this heartbreak and turned his personality around, becoming a better cop, a better father, and a better friend, making it one of the best redemption arcs.

A character who had the least developed character arc in season 1 and some of season 2, Ormewood surprisingly has risen as one of the beloved characters of the show now, thanks to his sense of humor, which has become a common occurrence in every episode now.

In the latest episode of season 3, titled A Funeral Fit for a Quartermaine, Ormewood is set to begin another emotional journey after Dr. Seth McDale's explosive revelation of Ormewood having a brain tumor. This revelation made Ormewood remember his father’s death at a young age of 53. He recalled how he could not even come back to say goodbye to his father when he was dying, as he was stationed abroad at that time.

This new storyline surely will change Ormewood’s character arc further.

More about McLaughlin’s character Michael Ormewood from Will Trent

In a TV Line interview, showrunners Liz Heldens and Daniel Thomsen talked about the new storyline involving Ormewood. They shared that to know about the extent of the tumor, we have to wait for a few more episodes.

They further shared what made them choose Ormewood as the character who would go through something so tragic. Liz Heldens said:

"So much of Ormewood’s identity is wrapped up in being strong and capable. He was a soldier. To find that physical vulnerability with him just seemed like a really cool place to go."

Daniel Thomsen added to this:

"We’re making story out of what we both think is a really emotional thing. When this happens, it’s really scary. There’s a lot of stuff you have to do just in case something goes wrong during this procedure. He’s got two kids. It’s a combination of having all of this stuff, and then not wanting to confront your potential mortality."

The storyline will focus on how Ormewood reveals this information to his children and how it will impact his relationship with Faith.
