This Supernatural star also has a rock band & I had no clue about his musical genius till now

Dean Winchester from Supernatural is a part of a rock band in real life? I had no clue that Jensen Ackles (who plays Dean in The CW's fantasy drama) is a musical genius and also has a rock band with his college roommate, Steve Carlson (another popular musician).

While I had no prior knowledge of Ackles' musical background until now, this adds even more depth to his character in the fantasy series, who was also a music enthusiast.

In The CW's most popular show, which ran for fifteen seasons, Dean was not only known for his music playlists but also had impeccable taste in music. From Metallica, AC/DC, and Van Halen to Kansas, Dean had an impressive music taste.

I can't help but wonder how Ackles might have projected his own musical influence on the character he played for fifteen long seasons.

Supernatural star Jensen Ackles co-founded a rock band with his college roommate

While Dean had a pretty extensive list of songs that he liked to listen to while hunting monsters in the fantasy show, Ackles also has a special relationship with music.

It totally makes sense for his character to have such a flawless taste in music because Ackles also comes from a musical family. Growing up, Ackles' mother played the piano, and his father was a guitar player. The Supernatural actor followed in his father's footsteps and developed a fondness for the guitar.

While this was initially a passion and hobby, only ardent fans would know that he has a thriving music career with his college roommate, Steve Carlson. Carlson and Ackles founded the rock band Radio Company and had been performing and writing songs for 15 years.

But if Ackles' rock band missed your radar despite being an ardent Supernatural fan, that is because they released their first album in 2018, titled Vol. 1.

Talking with Entertainment Weekly, the star discussed their debut album back in 2018:

“As you listen through the album, you’ll notice it’s a pretty wide range of music styles. Steve was like, ‘This album is anywhere from Motown to Metallica.’”

Some of my sleuthing also led me to discover that Ackles' first single was featured in Supernatural. In a happy turn of events for the star, his debut album coincided with the release of the final season of Supernatural and even featured their first single.

Before the rest of the world could hear his debut album, Vol. 1, Ackles surprised his fans by featuring one of his first singles, “Sounds of Someday,” in Season 15 Episode 4, Atomic Monsters.

Not only was this episode Ackles' last directorial for the fantasy show, it also featured Radio Company's first single at the end, when Sam and Dean had a run-in with their monster of the week.

Ackles was honored to have his music featured on the show's final season, as he told Variety:

“That was a small victory. That was a nice vote of confidence, especially from a show that prides itself on music so much.”

Since Vol. 1, Ackles has released two additional albums with Radio Head: Vol. 2 in 2021 and Keep On Ramblin' in 2023.
