Eric Kripke's fantasy drama Supernatural, which became one of America's longest-running and most popular shows, ended with a fifteen-season run in 2020.
The show follows Sam and Dean, two Winchester brothers who hunt demons, monsters, and otherworldly beings. Season 15 concluded with the Winchester family safely making it to Heaven, where they would spend the entirety of their afterlife.
While Jared Padalecki and Jensen Achles were fan-favorite characters, who played the role of Winchester brothers on the show, their mother was also an important character whose death loomed largely in the show's initial seasons.
While Mary Winchester's death is one of the biggest forces for Sam, Dean and their father in Supernatural Season 1, viewers only learned about her through flashbacks and back stories. She was a devoted mother who even gave up hunting to look after her family and children.
She was resurrected in Season 12 by Amara as a gift to Dean but was eventually killed off again in Season 14. Mary was an intriguing character, who should surely return if the show potentially returns for Season 16.
More on Mary's death in Supernatural in our story.
Mary Winchester's second death was disappointing in Supernatural
Much of the brothers' and Jack's actions in Supernatural Season 1 were motivated by Mary's death and the killing of Azazel. However, fans were pleasantly surprised in Season 12 when Mary was resurrected by Amara.
Not only did Mary's resurrection provide Dean and Sam with a way to reconnect with their mother, but it also allowed Dean to see her in a new light. The show also benefited from Mary's resurrection storyline, as it provided a new direction for the show.
While the show primarily focused on the Winchester brothers, Mary's resurrection introduced a separate storyline, one in which she struggled to adapt to her new surroundings. This also allowed her sons to help their mother settle into her new life, and together, they even took down British Men of Letters in America.
Supernatural immediately abandoned Mary's storyline and her relationship with her sons after her second death. While Mary's second death, at the hands of her own husband, added a great shock value, it was disappointing.
As a Reddit user u/Arkovia rightly pointed out:
''It [Mary's death] is bad because the writers didn't use her to rebuild an emotional connection or create a cathartic moment for the Winchester brothers. either to help with their mental hygiene, cope with the loss of the parents/loved ones, or have a life outside of Hunting.''
Her eradication in Season 14 felt sudden, the characters would have benefitted with her further involvement in the show.
Mary Winchester could potentially return in a Supernatural reboot
While Eric Kripke has not yet expressed any desire to reboot Supernatural or continue the show with a Season 16, one can only hope, given the popularity of the show.
A reboot could also possibly work best for the franchise, given its genre. Since death is not final in the show's universe and dead characters can always return through resurrection or turning into ghosts, chances are that Mary Winchester also makes an appearance.
And since the character was once resurrected by Amara in Season 12, which was one of the biggest twists in the show, she can be brought back once again. Since Angels hold power over souls in the show's universe and can bring back anybody from the dead, Mary can very well be resurrected in a potential Supernatural reboot.
