NBC's Chicago Med, a staple in the One Chicago universe along with Chicago PD and Chicago Fire, introduced a recurring character in Season 10.
Actor Brendan Hines made his One Chicago debut in the medical procedural Season 10 Episode 10 as Dr. Nicholas Hayes, an impressive doctor, who even managed to garner attention from the tough Emergency Department Chief Dr. Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos).
Hayes quickly became a recurring character, and his appearances on the show, especially his interactions with Dr. Lenox, suggest that Chicago Med has added another layer to its procedural, a romantic storyline for Dr. Lenox.
While Dr. Lenox has been a tough, no-nonsense doctor, it was hard to miss her attraction to the new doctor. In the latest episode (Episode 18), she even took up Hayes' offer to attend a weekend conference together.
She initially denies his offer, but in the episode's final moments, she suggests they go to Myrtle Beach together, hinting at a potential romance.
More on Hayes and Lenox's potential romance in Chicago Med in our story.
Brendan Hines' character teased a potential romance with Dr. Caitlin Lenox in Chicago Med
Since Dr. Nicholas Hayes' debut in Chicago Med Season 10 Episode 10, things have changed for Dr. Caitlin Lenox. The no-nonsense ER chief was immediately smitten by the new doctor when one of his patients was admitted to the ER.
Caitlin has been a professional doctor since her first appearance, and her usual conflicts with Dr. Archer suggest she is a serious woman who likes to focus on her work. But all this changed when Dr. Hayes walked through the ER doors in Episode 10.
Dr. Lenox even assisted him in a difficult surgery on the conjoined twins. Considering her nervousness around the new doctor, her crush was visible, suggesting that the medical drama is heading for a new romance.
While Hines was thought to be appearing in a guest role, he has since become a recurring character on Chicago Med. He appeared again in Episode 16, where he even recruited one of Lenox's students to his cardiovascular department.
At the end of the episode, Lenox joins Hayes and her student for a celebratory dinner, where she dresses up and puts her hair down. This is a visible change in her personality, brought on by Hayes' arrival.
Chicago Med showrunner teased a potential romance between Dr. Hayes and Dr. Lenox
Talking about Hayes' introduction, showrunner Allen MacDonald discussed how his character will help shed light on Lenox's character. In addition to her military background, very little is known about her past, which might change in the upcoming episodes:
"She was in the military, and she’s a woman. She’s had to work really hard, she’s had to protect herself, stay super professional. Of course, that’s kind of what comes to bite her in the ass, that people are like, 'Now you’re too professional,'” he told TV Line
However, according to MacDonald, this will change, and Hayes and Lenox are headed for a romance in Chicago Med:
“We will see Dr. Hayes again, and there’s more to come between Dr. Hayes and Dr. Lenox. [She is a] tough personality [but] sometimes there are little cracks...It’s like, ‘Oh, she is interested in possibly a romantic side or, at least, feels that sometimes,’ because she’s so closed off a lot of the time.”
Considering Hayes and Lenox's sweet moment in Season 10 Episode 18, the two are headed for a romance, and it would be interesting to see another side of Lenox.
