The ongoing Invincible season features the introduction of characters to the viewers. The third season also introduces us to two heroes from the comics, namely Dropkick and Fightmaster. The twins add a popular Sci-Fi trope to this universe: time travel.
We meet two new heroes in Invincible's third season, Fightmaster and Dropkick. They are introduced as two thieves who are trying to steal the Declaration of Independence for a reason. Shockingly, the twins are from the future and have time-traveling technology at their disposal. They are voiced by the same actor who is also a part of James Gunn's DCU, Xolo Maridueña.
Xolo Maridueña's Invincible role explained
Maridueña debuted in the entertainment industry with the NBC drama TV series Parenthood's third season. But the role through which he became a household name was that of one of Cobra Kai's central protagonists, Miguel Diaz. He returned as Miguel in the sixth and final season of The Karate Kid spin-off series. Other than being a part of the iconic martial arts franchise, the 23-year-old actor also joined the DCEU.
He was cast as Blue Beetle/Jaime Reyes in the now DCEU for the 2023 movie Blue Beetle, which was released across the world on August 18, 2023. The movie was received well by critics and those who saw it, but it was not financially successful, probably because of the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strike. However, fans were in for a surprise.
Invincible's Xolo Maridueña was retained for James Gunn's DCU
Even if Blue Beetle wasn't financially successful, fans of the movie and Xolo Maridueña's interpretation of Jaime were pleasantly surprised on June 14, 2024. A Deadline report revealed that despite the DCEU reboot, Blue Beetle was separate enough from the rest of the universe to be incorporated into the DCU. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and Angel Manuel Soto will be serving as the executive producers.
After waiting for a long time for an update, actor Xolo Maridueña himself gave an update on the show. During a Collider interview with editor Aidan Kelley, the talented actor said:
"I know everyone at DC is working hard on our Blue Beetle animated show, so that's going to be a really great way as like Blue Beetle 1.5, 2.0, whatever you want to call it. I'm really excited to explore that side of things... and see how we can push the world of Palmera City over animation. And, you know, I'm ready for Superman to be the biggest movie this year so that we can throw Blue Beetle right back into where the heck he needs to be."
The same day, the actor also appeared in another interview with Russ Milheim from The Direct. In that, he expressed hope for a 2026 release date by saying this:
"Hey man, arrest me! [laughs] I'm ready to come back. We're hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year."
Here's to hoping that we get the new DCU Blue Beetle series by 2026, but as of now, the show's release date remains unconfirmed.
As we wait for the DCU animated series, we can hear Xolo Maridueña in another animated show, Invincible Season 3.
