ABC's popular sitcom The Conners, a spin-off of the popular Roseanne series, is on its seventh and final season. With the two-part finale episode of The Conners Season 7 releasing on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, fans will be able to see how it ends for the caring yet dysfunctional family.

The spin-off addresses almost all the members of the Conners family, including the patriarch Dan, along with his children Darlene, Becky, and DJ. However, it fails to address the plotline of the youngest and the unplanned fourth child of Dan and Roseanne, Jerry Garcia Conner. Introduced in Roseanne Season 8, Jerry was largely forgotten in the 2018 spin-off that spanned across seven seasons. While the OG show initially explained his absence due to a fishing trip in Alaska, the reason was something deeper. Meanwhile, the viewers have seen Dan only referring to his three children, Darlene, Beck, and DJ, thus teasing an underlying conflict with his younger son. Due to his absence from The Conners, Jerry is often tagged as a retconned character.

With The Conners ending soon, will the show address the glaring plot hole, or will it leave it for the audience's imagination? However, a surprise guest appearance of the youngest son, Jerry, might provide closure to the major loophole.

More about Jerry Gracia Conner: The Conners

Jerry Garcia Conner was born to Dan and Roseanne in 1995, as shown in the Halloween special episode of Roseanne, Season 8 Episode 5. Being an unplanned baby, Jerry was significantly younger than his siblings. He was named after the Grateful Dead band's frontman, Jerry Garcia.

In The Conners, Season 3, Episode 2, Halloween the Election Vs The Pandemic, the oldest Conner daughter, Becky, mentioned that there were three Conners siblings, including her. Interestingly, Dan agreed to her statement and confirmed that he and his deceased wife, Roseanne, only had three children, contrary to the storyline of the original series. In a 2018 interview, The Conners showrunner Bruce Helford told TVLine,

"We decided some of the things from the 8th and 9th seasons wouldn't apply, as they were either limiting to opening new creative roads for the character. We didn't have to add Jerry Garcia, but we had a soft spot in our hearts for him, so we put him on a fishing boat and said he rarely contacted the family."

When asked about why Jerry's father, Dan, and her sister, Becky, refused to acknowledge him as one of the Conners siblings, he said,

"Dan said he only had three children, but is he so angry at Jerry, for something we learn about later, that he denies him as a son. We'll have to wait and see."

Yet, five years later, this storyline remains untouched. With the finale approaching, Jerry's return could finally explain his estrangement from his family for many years.

Why is the series finale a perfect opportunity?

A cameo from Jerry (now in his 30s) would not only satisfy the old fans but also strengthen the show's legacy. His absence has been a sore spot, especially compared to other retcons. A brief yet meaningful appearance- perhaps reconnecting with the family after Roseanne's passing could resolve the mystery.

The Conners are well known for emotional arcs. Jerry's cameo would be a way to answer several unanswered doubts. If Jerry doesn't appear in the series finale, the loophole may remain forever, leaving fans to wonder what happened to the youngest Conner.
