Daredevil: Born Again saw the return of the comicbook saga featuring Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.
The Disney+ show carries forward a story that started with Netflix's 2015 Daredevil series, which followed the adventure of the protagonist, who is blind lawyer Matt Murdock by day and the masked vigilante Daredevil by night. The superhero's constant battle is with New York's crime lord, Kingpin.
Both Kingpin and Daredevil are modeled after characters appearing in the Marvel comics, and being cast as Kingpin, aka Fisk, also marked D'Onofrio's MCU debut in 2015.
Here is a look back at the time when Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D'Onofrio made his feelings known about working with Marvel.
When Daredevil: Born Again star Vincent D'Onofrio shared his experience with Marvel
Marvel Entertainment has made many careers, and many actors associated with the entertainment company are still known by the characters they play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Vincent D'Onofrio made his MCU debut in 2015 with Netflix's Daredevil, where he played the character of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.
Nobody knew that saga would find a reboot after nearly seven years in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+, with D'Onofrio reprising his character.
Here is a look back at what the actor said about his MCU debut in 2014, to Screen Rush:
''The thing about Marvel is that they’re not – they’re into real acting. They’re looking for artists that are willing to take chances and are willing to create characters, even if that character has been around for years and years in comic books, they still are depending on us to create something and take it somewhere else.''
He further discussed how people associate MCU characters with their comicbooks and how stepping in those characters' shoes was a big challenge, which Robert Downey Jr. had mastered with Iron Man.
Opening up about his experience working with Marvel in Daredevil, the actor said:
''Yeah, it’s huge. It’s huge. I mean the whole Marvel world is so huge. But I gotta tell you, I couldn’t be working for nicer people. I really am. I’m just having a great time.''
Vincent D'Onofrio has played Wilson Fisk in four MCU projects
While Daredevil: Born Again marks the actor's return to the world of Kingpin, he also reprised his character after Netflix's Daredevil in Hawkeye (2021) and Echo (2024) respectively. In these Marvel projects, D'Onofrio has shown his talent as the antagonist, and earned critical acclaim for his performance, too.
His role in 2015's Daredevil also earned him nominations at the Saturn Award in the category of Best Supporting Actor in Television, and at the EWwy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Talking about his character in the original series, the star said:
''I think that there will be no other Wilson Fisk but this one after we’re all done with it. That’s what we’re hoping for.''
Daredevil: Born Again saw Kingpin's return after the events of Echo. As the story begins, he is back in New York with plans to become the next mayor of the city. He eventually wins the polls in Episode 1.
It remains to be seen what will become of his character as Season 1 proceeds.
