With the third season of Bosch: Legacy having come to a conclusion, there remains the nagging notion that the two fan favourite characters of Crate and Barrel were severely underutlized throughout the latest season of the Prime Video show.
I was expecting that the two characters of Detectives Barrel Johnson, played by Troy Evans and Robert 'Crate' Moore, played by Gregory Scott Cummins, would assume roles of greater significance on Bosh: Legacy season three alongside the Titus Welliver. I'm hopeful, however, that the upcoming Renee Ballard spin-off show might do these two veterans some justice.

Barrel and Crate should have been properly explored on Bosch: Legacy
There's no denying the fact that Barrel and Crate were an indispensable part of the original Bosch which aired for a total of seven seasons. While Harry Bosch himself went on his separate way after the disbanding of the LAPD's Hollywood Division, it seemed that Crate and Barrel might not get another shot at making themselves seen on the show. I was excited to spot the two beloved characters on the Bosch: Legacy episode Horseshoes and Handgrenades off the first season's second episode. This was similarly repeated by their appearance on the second season as well.
Regardless, this was no match for the fifty odd appearances of the two characters on the original show. I still consider that Bosch: Legacy would have benefitted immensely by providing the two with a different and more comprehensive character arc. It's possible that the studio went in the opposite direction as they happen to prefer younger characters as compared to the old and aging Barrel and Crate who are also retired in the world of the show.
Troy Evans opens up about his journey on the show
Speaking in an exclusive interview with GameRant, Troy Evans shared his insights about the show, along with snippets of his journey on the show as a character. When asked about the show's realistic portrayal of the city of Los Angeles, Evans recalled:
"Yes, the real L.A. When they first made the deal for Bosch, Amazon wanted to shoot it in Vancouver, and Michael Connelly, bless his heart, said 'we won't do it'. All that stuff like Musso and Frank's was key. The Real L.A. spots are so important."
He was then asked about the relationship between Barrel and Crate on the spin-off show:
"I'm not coming from a neutral position, but I have a deep appreciation for Crate and Barrel and what they contributed to that story and, in my mind, it's this: Everybody loves Harry Bosch, but he's an obsessive human being. And when he's on a case, that's it. He's going to be focused on that case 24 hours a day until he gets that mother f**k*r. Crate and Barrel are two very good detectives who are still enjoying their lives, and they go home at the end of their shift. They did one episode where they showed me watching TV with my dog and having a drink. That's not what Bosch would do."
Bosch: Legacy is exclusively available on Prime Video.
