Fans who attended the Star Wars Celebration event in Tokyo were surprised with a screening of the Andor Season 2 premiere. Moreover, just before the screening, there was a live performance in which the performers dressed as the Narkina 5 prisoners as a nod to the episode from season 1 titled “One Way Out.”
For those who don't know, Narkina 5 is the prison where Andor was imprisoned and forced to work in the prison labor to create what will ultimately end up becoming the Death Star, i.e., Cassian Andor had a hand in building the instrument that would end up killing him in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The finale of Andor Season 2 will end just moments before we meet Cassian in Rogue One.
Fans were also treated to a brief Q&A session before the Andor Season 2 premiere screening. Tony Gilroy, Diego Luna, Adria Arjona, Alan Tudyk, Kyle Soller, Genevieve O’Reilly, Denise Gough, and Sanne Wohlenberg were all subjected to questions regarding the upcoming season. When asked to describe the upcoming second season, actor Diego Luna's response was:
“It’s so big in every possible way. There’s more adventure, action and drama. We’re getting close to Rogue One, so everything matters so much. It’s emotionally charged. It’s going to be intense. And when you finish watching this second and last season, go straight to Rogue One, because you’re going to see a different film.”
Tony Gilroy also had interesting things to say about Andor Season 2:
We learned in this Q&A session that the first season of the solo series unfolded over a year. But Gilroy revealed that the twelve episodes of Andor Season 2 will cover four years. It should be noted that the events of Andor Season 1 take place five years before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Thus, time will jump forward a year every three episodes in Andor Season 2. Gilroy explained thusly:
“So every three episodes will represent one year, and we’re going to drop them three a week. So, it’s basically, like dropping a whole movie every week. “We find the most important three days to land on.”
Apart from clarifying the timeline of the upcoming second season. Tony Gilroy also had some interesting revelations regarding Andor Season 2.
Tony Gilroy implies a theatrical release for Andor Season 2 in the future:
In the same event, Andor Season 2 showrunner hinted that the episodes of the series would also be accessible on the big screen. But, for now, there is no release date for the cinema release or where it will be available. Here is what Tony Gilroy told Collider's Steve Weintraub when the former was asked about the possibilities of a theatrical release:
"It's been discussed. We've mixed [Episodes] 1, 2, and 3 to play theatrically. They do need a little bit of an extra mix. We mix differently for how we deliver normally, because people watch on their iPads, on their TVs — it’s 5.1 [aspect ratio]. If you’re mixing for theaters, it's not like a switch. It takes a couple hours or a day to do that. So we have [Episodes] 1, 2, and 3. If there was enough interest, I'm sure Disney would roadshow it at some point. Why not? I think they have interest in showing [Episode] 12 going into Rouge [One], but that depends on how the show does. They look good on a big screen."
The showrunner also confirmed that the version released for the big screen presentation will not be accessible on Disney+:
"We've never done that. When we cut them together for the [Episodes] 1, 2, and 3 theatrical [cut], we do, we put all the credits at the end. People should be able to watch them, like, if you want to watch one episode on the first night and the second episode the second night, there should be a way to do that."
The first three episodes of Andor Season 2 will become accessible through streaming on Disney+ on April 22, 2025. After that, three episodes of the series will be released weekly until May 13, 2025, when the 12-episode season will conclude its run.
