Squid Game might just be the biggest sensation at the moment. There's no doubt that the all-pervasive success of Squid Game season two has propelled Netflix's revenue generation to the stratosphere. A domestic South Korean research agency had previously projected that the second season of Squid Game might rake in a whopping 1.5 trillion Won or $1 billion in revenue for Netflix.
However, the streaming platform giant recently debunked this claim, stating to The Korea Times that counting individual revenue generation from a single show isn't how the subscription model works.
K Entertech Hub is a South Korean research group that had previously predicted that the second season of Squid Game will possibly lead to 1.5 trillion Won worth of returns. In calculating this revenue projection, the research group took into account the ratio between the budget of Squid Game season one and the earnings generated by the same.
Netflix, nevertheless, dispelled this notion so that a misunderstanding in this regard doesn't lead to further confusion regarding their business model. Here's everything that we know.
Squid Game season 2 revenue predictions didn't take Netflix's business model into account
Season two surpassed the debut season in terms of popularity. The second season occupied the first position on Netflix's top ten list across ninety-three countries worldwide. This was achieved by the popular show's second installment in just a matter of four days following its release on December 26, 2024. This was in contrast to the first season, which took eight days to hit the top spot.
The budget for the first season was roughly 25 billion won and returned a high 1 trillion worth of revenue, making a record profit of around forty times the amount of the production budget. K Entertech Hub relied on the understanding of this equation to predict that since the production budget for the second installment has been upped to about 100 billion won, the returns might be in the vicinity of 1.5 trillion won!
In the statement released to The Korea Times, Netflix stated:
"As a monthly subscription service, Netflix cannot generate additional revenue based on the number of views or viewing time of individual works,” the company said to The Korea Times. There is no official information that allows for the estimation of monetary revenue from individual works. Netflix does not evaluate the performance of works in this way, nor can we do so."
The statement further added:
"We express concern about the spread of inaccurate information due to incorrect analyses or claims that could cause significant misunderstandings about this business structure."
The success of the South Korean show has broken long-standing records. According to data analytics firm Parrot Analytics, the demand factor for the show reached an astonishing 108% in the United States itself, surpassing the 100% baseline in South Korea.
When will Squid Game season three drop?
As of this writing, there's no official confirmation about the release date of the Netflix show's third season. It is expected that the next installment will drop sometime in 2025. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk wrote and shot the second and the third seasons consecutively, with the third season now in the stage of post-production.
Squid Game seasons one and two are exclusively available on Netflix.
